I've tried many different approaches, and I'm at the point where Im sooo confused and frustrated! If anyone has achieved a successful weight loss, in a reasonable time, PLEASE let me know. I love to walk, and would be into trying yoga, and free weights... but I hate going to sweaty gyms.

As far as food - I love sushi, peanut butter, fruit, veggies, pasta, seafood, rice, and chicken.

Oh, yes, some dark chocolate is good too.

I don't drink (alcohol) and stay away from soda and diet drinks.

I know water is a good thing, but have trouble drinking 100 ounces a day, but will do it if it is neccesary for weight loss.

Thanks for your help!

Eat several (5-6) small meals a day...your body will burn calories faster and build your metabolism in a short period of time.
(eat about every 2 hours)
The first 8-10 pounds you shed is water.
Meal suggestions:
1st: piece of fruit
2nd: string cheese, summer sausage, cottage cheese/yogurt
3rd: bowl of cereal
4th: soup/sandwich
5th: a good dinner-meat, potatoes/pasta/rice, veggie...your body needs carbs, protein and vitamins to stay healthy
6th: salad/raw veggies
Drink plenty of water
Drink milk or juice/water with every meal (no soda pop)
Stay away from munchies, fried & fatty foods.
Do daily simple exercise like walking/hiking...swimming and biking are low impact, playing games like basketball, baseball, volleyball will tone your body and you'll have fun doing it.

In 1998, I had let myself go up to 182 pounds ( I am 5-10) and went on a diet called Flat Stomach ASAP by Elllington Darden. It involves calorie restriction, lots of cold water and moderate weight training. I dropped 25 pounds in 6 weeks and for the most part kept it off. I am now around 153-155 pounds now.

You can lose 50 pounds in 6 months but you have to be realistic. If you do not restrict your calories and adjust your routine, you will fail. I liked the Flat Stomach ASAP routine because it is simple to follow and does not involve arduous exercise. You can get the book at the library or on line or at the bookstore.

I gave the book to my friends after I dropped the weight and very few people followed it. Most people would rather be fat than do anything to lose weight.

So be realistic and if you are serious, make a commitment. Do not make excuses.

Stop eating the pasta and rice. Do not eat any carbs or much of anything in the evening. Eat a little protein snack before you go to bed if you want. Never let yourself feel hungry if you are hungry then eat but eat something protein or a green type veg. Never drink juices like oj. If you want an orange eat a real one. Don't do any deserts with fake or real sugar. No white breads or commercial pretend grain breads ... again as little breads as possible. Eat good protein like eggs, chicken, fish beef, pork etc.
No lunch meats. Try to drink a glass of water before every meal.
Do some kind of exercise when you first get up in the am. Walking is great. You can loose the 50 if you do these things.

There is definitely NO WAY you could lose 50 pounds in 6 months without exercising and it isn't exactly healthy. The only way to lose weight is to do something to sweat. Swim, run, jog, go to a martial arts club, anything that will keep you moving and don't eat anymore than 1000 calories.

LindaJean, This may help you. I feel the same about gyms and all that stuff so I got myself a nordictrack ski machine that simulates cross country skiing. I looked in the want ads and found one for sale, called the owner and made arrangements to see it. I brought cash with me and bought the machine. It came with a file that the couple had with all the info on it. I use the thing at home 15 mn. a day and it will do the job. You will loose weight. This machine will give every bit if you use it so, that said I hope this helps you. I wanted one back in the late 80's but never got one. Now I have one at half of what it would have cost me. Don't look on ebay. I did that and they are more costly. I went in the local want ads and got a good one. The one I have folds up and can go in the closet easily. Its a great machine.

sadieoyes is on the right track with the 5-6 meals a day, but I would add that weight training is an excellent addition to this because it will increase your metabolism for up to 48 hours after each workout. Also, you should stay away not only soda but from juice of any kind. It's just sugar that gets stored as fat almost immediately because it doesn't cost any calories to digest the way fruit does.

All the foods you mentioned loving are fine, provided you switch to whole grain pasta and rice, as they are complex carbs rather than simple carbs. Simple carbs of any kind are pretty much equivalent to sugar in terms of fat storage.

In fact, reading over that list of foods makes me think you would enjoy the Abs Diet. It's the diet I used to get back in shape and it allows you to eat all those things, even peanut butter (which is actually good for you because it has the good kind of fat in it which boosts testosterone which boosts fat burning, provided you get the low sugar kind, or even better that natural fresh-ground kind you get in Whole Foods or one of those other organic grocery stores). You can buy The Abs Diet by David Zinczenko in pretty much any major book store. Just get the basic book and ignore the supplementary stuff for now. It will change your life. 50 pounds in 6 months is very doable on that diet.

How many hours a day can you walk? Seriously, walking is a good start, but you should progress to doing some jogging too - no pain, no gain. I hate gyms too, we exercise outside whenever possible. And get some free weights for home, because you need to balance your walking & running with some weights.

As far as eating ... if you eat healthy and don't overdo, you don't need to eat diet foods. Your list of foods sounded pretty good.

Peanut Butter is a killer. 2 tablespoons provide 25% of your daily fat limits. But, I love it also.

Trick with any food is to eat it in moderation. But you have to exercise. If you don't burn the calories you take in, it's going to grow on you. You can't eliminate all calories, because you need them for normal energy.

Yoga won't help. Aerobics would. How about dancing lessons? Good exercise and you'll get something out of it.

If you can stand to go walking, do it...brisk walking, get your ipod,or whatever you listen to music on and get going. I hate gyms too, so I walk, and I do a pilates dvd at home with my friends who are gym haters. If you cannot get 100 oz of plain water down, take in 20-40 oz(1-2 water bottles) of crystal light...the peach tea is good. Stay away from the peanut butter, it is high in fat. Stay away from the rice too, it is a bad starch. If you must have some rice, only eat brown rice, and limit yourself to 1-2 times a week. My dr has told me to eat no more than 8oz of salad(real leafy, with your tomatoes, cucumbers, sprouts, etc...) add 4oz of grilled chicken(4-5 tenders), low fat dressing, or balsamic dressing for lunch...skim milk with Special K for b'fast, or I make a pure fruit, ice&water smoothie, I use splenda for sweetning....at dinner, I eat lean meat, steamed veggies, or another huge salad. For in between snacks, raw veggies, strawberries, fat free jello or pudding. You have to eat to keep your metabolism up to burn fat & to lose weight. I do not do the soda thing either. I drink my 100 oz of water, and try to eat healthy. You can lose close to 10 lbs a month if you will stick with it, and brisk walk at least three times a week for at least thirty minutes to an hour. If I can do it, anyone can....I lost approx 8-10 lbs per month this way, and I have kept it off, but I didn't stop walking just because I met my goal either. I still eat really healthy, but I do splurge on occaision, you have to treat yourself, but do not allow it to get out of hand, oh, and those last five ounds were the kicker for me. I did a lot of Billy Blanks dvds too!!! I still do them, especially when I get stressed out!!! I just prefer my pilates, and walking.
Good luck!!!!

You seem to be on the right track as far as diet goes. but in order to lose weight your going to have to do cardiovascular exercises.. Yoga, free weights, and walks are fine but you need to sweat. If you do free weights and don't do them right, you could just actually bulk yourself in muscle mass and appear like your not losing any weight. But you really need to to the cardio and that means that your going to sweat. Good Luck.
