in this order #1 Ardbeg. If it's not available(and it is devilishly difficult to find) I like #2 Lagavullin, also very difficult. After that #3 Laphraoig. This are the most full bodied single malt scotches made. They are all southern Islay malts, from a small island called Islay off the north of Scotland. Another fine single malt I have had is Bowmore, also an Islay malt, but from the north side of the Island and of a lighter character; perhaps what Glen Fiddich, the Glenlivet, and Glen Morangie aspire to, but will never attain!

These whiskies are rare and pricey. The price depends on the age, from 6 and 10 year old Ardbeg at about 30 pounds ( $55 US)a bottle to the 31 year old at 450 pounds($820 US).

My all-time favorite is 1946 vintage Macallan (about $4000 retail). However, on a day to day reality level I'd have to say there are a few better deals:

1) John, Mark and Robbo's Rich Spicy One ($29)
2) Compass Box Hedonism ($77)
3) Isle of Jura 16 year ($54)
4) John Barr Blue Label ($43)
5) Macallan 18 ($130) - Consistenly one of the best whiskeys ever.

If you want good values of older whiskies, try MacKillop's Choice or Signatory bottlings.
