You tell yourself that you are completely satisfied with your possessions after buying tons of new stuff that you are convinced will make everything better. Then you see something and you must have it. And you try to walk away and you can't. Your life now seems empty because you don't have this thing. You need to have it even if it may cause financial problems. And maybe one isn't good enough, you need it in every color or one size up or down in case you gain/lose weight. And then you tell yourself that this is the last time and that is all you need to be happy. And then it happens all over again...and again.

Shopping addiction or compulsive spending, in my opinion, is the manifestation of the search for something meaningful in your life. You seek peace; you seek a quiet in your soul that you do not have and cannot find. You feel "good" inside when you spend; you feel a satisfaction that for now makes you feel fulfilled. But it soon fades, as does the "hit" from any addiction. So you go out and spend more money, most likely on things you don't need. The cycle then repeats itself.
Who's money are you spending-- your own or that of your spouse? If it's that of your spouse, you need to gain control very quickly, lest marital problems ensue that will destroy your marriage.
Do you need help? Only you can decide. Ask yourself: Do I spend for a quick high or do I really need the things I buy? Be honest with yourself. The first step is to confess to yourself that "I have a problem." Do you wait breathlessy for the jewelry hour on QVC or HSN? Is your basement full of boxes of stuff you bought over TV or on-line, the boxes stacked and still unopened? Have you ever really USED the stuff you bought or did you buy it because it would be "nice to have?" Answer these questions honestly and then decide.

Purchasing many things on a whim that are not needed to the point of not being able to pay bills or put food on the table.
Or Purchasing many things on a whim that are not needed to the point that your debts become overwhelming and you face serious financial difficulties.
Or Purchasing useless things impulsively in large quantities, like filling your garage with 20 pallets of Charmin because you could buy 5 and get 1 free or something equally silly.

You think about shopping daily.
You go shopping daily.
You buy things you don't need, or sometimes even want.
You have many clothes items with the tags still on.
You hide things so your spouse doesn't know you bought more.
You may be in debt.
You have an inner hunger and get a fix by shopping.

I know when I'm depressed shopping with gives me that temporary "high" of feeling good so I do it when I'm down or in a bad mood. Maybe just check and see what kind of mood/state of mind your in before you go.

when your debts on credit cards and your spending habits exceed your ability to pay them off in full with no impact to the rest of your obligations or your family....you have a problem.
