I've had them on for almost a year now. Every now and then they rub my inner cheeks and lips raw. It hurts to talk! Serious answers please, I obviously know that if I shut up it won't hurt so bad.

Didn't the Dentist give you any wax to cover some of the sharper parts of your braces? That worked for me.

You won't hear this from a dental professional but I would chew sugar free gum after my monthly adjustment and then place the soft gum on the offending bracket (s). The gum felt good against my cheek and/or lips. Wax is good if you can get the soft kind. But even then it doesn't always "stick" to the offending bracket. The answer of keeping them clean was great advise too. A Sonicare toothbrush will not only clean your teeth and brackets but it whitens your teeth too! They run about $100 but you won't be sorry to have spent the money. Sometimes it is hard to reach every nook and cranny of the brackets. The Sonicare finds all the spots effortlessly. (No, I don't work for Sonicare. I just believe in the product.) I have had my braces off since Dec. 05 and WOW are they nice. People are always telling me what a great smile I have. Remember that it is all worth the effort you are going through right now. Even the pain. Good Luck!

Hi,
I feel your pain. I has braces for seven years. The stuff that worked best for me was a wax that came in thin strings (like Twizzlers pull and peel). On my bad days I would just take a length of this and pack it in around the brackets that felt worst. Unfortunately, when you eat lunch, most of the wax will come off, but if you bring extra with you, you can replace it after you brush your teeth.
They also make the wax in sticks that look like chap-sticks. You just rub the stick over the brackets that hurt, and then squeeze the wax into place, or you can break off little tiny pieces right form the stick.
If your dentist doesn't have the wax (I can't believe they don't, though, it's where I always got mine) then the drugstore should have some. Ask at the pharmacy counter if you can't find it with the dental care items.

(I also recommend brushing your teeth after lunch when you're at school, the school nurse should let you do it in the nurse's room if there's a sink or bathroom there. Believe it or not, it will help cut down on the pain a bit.)

Hang in there....

You and I are in the same boat. The last couple of days have been really bad with the upper lip. The only thing I have found is to put the wax on the ones that seem to be giving you the most trouble. I have times that I wish I could just peel these things off. Good thing I did not get the Invisiline kind

>Oh, don't try eating fresh pineapple when the inside of your mouth is raw from these torture devises. You will be stinging so bad that you will think that your entire mouth has been slashed with a million knife cuts. found this out today.

Nevermind ortho wax, get silicone from your ortho or buy it (in the toothpaste aisle). You take a small piece, roll it into a tiny ball and squish it onto the offending bracket or wire. It works like a charm! Within a day or 2 your cheeks/lips will be back to normal (and the pain goes away right away). I love the silicone, it's much easier to use and not as messy as the wax.

You can get "orthodontic wax" in the drug store, near the toothpaste.

Also, you can ask your orthodontist about using a "lip protector." It's a clear plastic sleeve that slips over the brackets and provides a cushion for your lips and cheeks. Not all cases can accept these devices, because they have too many gizmos, bends in the wires or elastics, but if you can use them, you'll be glad you asked.

Your orthodontist should have given you some wax to place on the brackets where it rubs. Rinse with a mixture of salt water and baking soda to help the rubbed areas heal. Go to your orthodontist and ask for the wax that they should have offered you. My son always keeps some at the house in case the brackets start to rub.

Yup, the wax for sure. Take a little piece off and roll it into a ball then place it over trouble spots. The stuff from my ortho sucked. I just bought some from the grocery store, plus is was mint flavored :)

yeah, wax is really nice. When you have sore it helps to gurgle with salt water. (even if it stings a bit).
