The Catholic Church takes into account literature, philosophy, history, and science. Read G.K. Chesterton, Thomas Aquinas, St. Augustine, Dante, Shakespeare, Joseph Pearce, just to name a few. Read Thomas Merton's The Seven Story Mountain and write down everyone he mentions in his journey to find God. Philosophy is everything to the Church. Most Christians don't get schooled in literature, philosophy, history, or science at church. Many go to church and only hear the Bible read, so the limit themselves only to the Bible in their quest for truth. However, to fully know ones faith (Christianity in this case) it is pivotal to read literature, philosophy, history, and science. This gives a true understanding and greater perspective of what one really believes. Do "real" Christians do this? Yes. Are all Christians' pursuit of knowledge toward their faith pursued in the same manner? No. Also, who is defining "real" Christians and what is their definition are also to be considered.
Read St. Bernard, St. Theresa. Also read Dostoevsky. He is a genius.

I'm a "real" christian, and I read any book you will put in front of me. I took advanced classes in World History in High School as well as Philosophy courses. Science isn't my talent, but my father and I always talk about the latest advances and discoveries in science. I went to an arts school for three years where I studied poetry, prose, journalism, memoir and humor. Does that answer your question of really how educated can a christian be?

''do they ever read or study any great works of literature, philosophy, history or science?''
Some do. I guess it would depend on the level of enjoyment of reading for each individual. But just to clarify about your 2nd part of the question...the Bible includes all 4 (and then some) of the categories that you have in question.

besides the Bible, on the prompt, i'm interpreting "the best Earth" by using Pearl S. dollar "5 steps to a pro presence" "What colour is my parachute" I surely have 2 bookcases finished of books, plus an overhead compartment on my headboard finished of hardcover and paperback books. only about a million in 4 of those books may be considered Christian in nature. even as maximum of my leisure interpreting are brainless romance novels or some thing both relaxing, I opt to study for organic leisure. notwithstanding, I do spend a tremendous kind of time interpreting books that i think can help you me with countless subject matters. We actually have 2 situations finished of DVDs and VCR tapes. only about 5 of them are Christian. some thing else are from the lower price racks on the close by food market. we've an finished collection of sci-fi, horror, drama, comedy, youthful ones videos, suspense, and some television seasons on DVDs as we do no longer have television.

ignoring the rude tone of your Question, yes-
we "Real" Christians can vary just like anyone else- some of us read 24/7, some of us once a month.
Also, science is not nessecarily "Against" all christian beliefs - moderation is the key word here.
While it IS recommended by some to read the bible/related scripture every day, not all Christians do.
You really can't judge people by "What they are" to determine key facts about them - for example, not all white people 'love' cheese ('The Boondocks' - He-He!), and many african-americans CAN swim.

Of course we do.
I am extremely well read in the classics, science, mathematics, and philosophy.
I tend to avoid books that are tripe because we should avoid tempatation.
