"As in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silence in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says. If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. What! Did the word of God originate with you, or are you the only ones it has reached? If any one thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that what I am writing to you is a command of the Lord. If any one does not recognize this, he is not recognized" (1 Corinthians 14:33-38).

No Christian girl, the bible said it, not I. Do you believe the bible? Only if you believe the bible would you be a sexist in the context of this verse.

funny how believers can say that this passage doesn't really mean what it says, but they (so far) fail to even offer an alternative explanation. Also funny how I am called a sexist, just for quoting the bible. I don't believe in the bible, or it's sexist policy, but many people claim to be christian and believe in the bible therefor making themselves sexist.

The Greek word here for 'remain silent' is SIGATOOSAN, the present, imperative form of SIGAOO. What do Greek lexicons say? Analytical: 'To be silent, keep silence'; Thayer: 'To keep silence, hold one's peace'; Arndt & Gingrich: 'Be silent, keep still ... in the senses: a. say nothing, keep silent ... b. stop speaking, become silent ... c. hold one's tongue, keep something (a) secret.' A.&G. classify 1 Corinthians 14:34 under meaning a. 'say nothing, keep silent'.

I never looked it this that close before. I know women should not teach men. But I don't know what to make of this. It sounds very divisive, however. It seems to me that if "by their fruits you shall know them" that this question is not bearing good fruit.

If it turns people away from Christ. I read scripture at church but I do not preach or teach. I am not very supportive of women ministers. But I have observed that many people are saved through a women sharing her testimony. So I am waiting on the answer to this myself.

My own conclusion to this has been that perhaps if a man has refused a call God used whoever was willing.

I think it's clearly wrong to treat women like second class citizens.
Muslim fundamentalists do this . You remind me of a Taliban for even asking a question like that.
True religion is an internal process. If someone else speaks in church or not has no bearing upon anything. Rules like that are not about religion, they have more to do with controling people.
I would say, go find a church that is more human.

PLEASE study significant The bible replaced into refferring to the girls people that the position loud and disrupting the church amenities. because of this he suggested this. have you ever study galations 3:28, Romans 16 and Joel 2:28? this may sparkling issues up that obviously the girls people are venerated as equals in Christ. There are some who may TWIST the scritpures to be controlling on right here yet which couldn't the case we are free in Christ Jesus and by no skill lower than the regulation or a yoke of bondage. also in case you look interior the gospels Jesus stuck up for females people and females people's rights. word the female stuck in adultry and the prostitutes who the position condemmed by skill of adult males and society Jesus stuck up for them. wish THIS CLEARS issues UP! advantages and that i disagree. perhaps you and 1cor 14 earlier eddy t p can discover more suitable useful footing because you beleive women people should be constrained and by no skill be equivalent. No offense or something like that! He beleives women people ought to not talk era! As for me i will conintue to do what i'm meant to as a lady of God sharing and preaching the gospel and being honest. I talk each so often in African American church homes the position they beleive in entire equality. they look a lot more suitable free then (some) white people's church homes are and they don't look as biased or reduce women people in something. .

Er, you're an ***. First off, that might only be in the KJV bible. Secondly, the Bilble, though a holy scripture, was written over and over by man. Who knows when the Bible may have been warped!

Get out of the Stone Age and start respecting women!

You misunderstand the scripture. That's not what is talking about. Did you got to bible school? Do you believe the KJV of 1611 is the ONLY translation? How about cutting hair of woman? What about One cup?

You must be Church of Christ 1908..my guess

Have you read these passages?

IT ACTUALLY READS
let your wives keep silent in the assemblies, for it has not been permitted for them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as the law also says. If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a woman to chatter in the assembly. What? Was it from you that the word of God went out? Or did it come to you alone? If any man thinks himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him recognize the things which I write to you, that they are the commandment of the Lord. But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant. Therefore, brothers, desire earnestly to prophesy, and don't forbid speaking with other languages. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

It appears to me that your exact passage was extracted from a webpage http://www.oldpaths.com/Archive/Davison/Roy/Allen/1940/silent.html

not directly from a bible, as I have read the King James bible version and the standard World English Bible version. Which leads me to believe this has nothing to do with your church affliation, and more of a way to start up a debate...Albeit as to not insult a person of religion I may however be wrong and it may written differently in yet another version of the bible

However there are many, many, instances in the bible that shows that All are considered equal under Jesus, except a a possible issue with Church position which vaires depending on the type of church and whether its conservative or Liberal...

There are a varient of reasonings why Paul made these statements, including the specific church he was in at the time and the specific ways of the Corinthians, it is also stated in 1 Corinthians 11:5 that woman may speak in church with certain restrictions

but we are travelling back to very early days of the church
.
You point out 1 passage but do not mention the others, also it is worthy to note that in the bible new testament and old that Jesus said very little in regards to the roles of men and women, but he showed how he felt in many different areas of the bible... check out some of the following:

John 4:7 talking to an unrelated woman as an equal
In Luke 8:1-3 Jesus had women as disciples.

Mary Magdalene, to be the first witness to carry the good news of the resurrection. This is extraordinary, and notable with regard to the fact that women were not allowed to be witnesses in legal proceedings under rabbinical law as they were said to be "all liars." Many female ministers have held this to be the main justification for their equal calling.

In Acts 2:14-18, in Peter's sermon at the initiation of the modern church, he quotes the prophet Joel about the pouring out of the Spirit in the last days: the quoted benefits of the Spirit are shared equally by men and women. In fact, both sons and daughters will prophesy. (Prophecy here is not so much a foretelling of the future - rather the primary meaning is to speak for God.)
Paul is accompanied by house-church leaders Priscilla and Aquila. Priscilla, a female, is a dominant figure in Paul's ministry and leads over Aquila.

A woman named Junia is mentioned of note among the apostles (KJV) Romans 16:7.

In Romans 16:1-2, f two female deaconesses

In Galatians 3:27-29, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus"

Women were looked upon Kindly by Jesus in many many ways in the bible and considered equal partners in spirituality, yes there are varients but women can speak in church, and many hold wonderful positions and are very very positive people for a variety of different Christian churches... Including bringing in revenue, which is something all churches want whether your tithing, or the donation baskets.... Women are very important to religion and were to Jesus, even when the Greeks and Romans considered woman mere servants, he had a respect for them.

These were Paul's words, and most of the misogyny in the New Testament is attributable to Paul. Jesus treated women as equals.
