First, how do YOU know what people feel? Are you a mind reader?
Second, the fish is called an icthus....way, way, way back when Christians were being persecuted, the ichthus was a secret symbol for CHristians to identify each other. One would draw a curved line and if the other person drew a curved line to complete the image of a fish, they knew they were brothers or sisters in the Lord....if the other person did nothing, then it was known where they stood.
The Greek letters in the "fish" are Iota, Chi, Theta, Upsilon, Sigma (thus the name I.C.Th.U.S.) Icthy-is a Greek root for the word "fish" (think ichthiologist)...and the letters stand for Jesus Christ God's Son Savior.
So, putting a fish on the car lets others know what they believe.
Why do you have to know? I don't know. Do you read other bumper stickers? Why do I have to know people love New York? Why do I have to know your son is an honor student? Why do I have to know what kind of beer you drink?
Bumper stickers are like a t-shirt for your car.
C'mon! Lighten up! Bumper Stickers and decals are part of American (and other countries'?) culture. If you don't like what you see, keep your eyes on the road!

It could be seen in the same way of wearing a cross necklace, ring or the Star of David. No it doesn't add value to the car and it depends on the person if it is more important than a "baby on board".

I have one on my car...and proudly so....as it tells the world a story of redemption ....and it invites everyone that sees it to salvation through Jesus Christ...It also warns as follows: if you are living as if there is no God and eternal life, you better make sure that you are right!...so that silver or golden fish is not about what religion someone follows! It does exceedingly better than that!

Hey, I have a silver fish on my car, and it has the name "Cthulhu" in the middle. I also have a silver fish with the letters FSM (Flying Spaghetti Monster). It's simply advertising for those very important critters.

I'm not stupid; matter of fact I'm pretty wise. The fact that I do or don't have a fish on my car is immaterial. Why does it bother you? Thousands of people have yellow "ribbons" on their cars, or pink ones or other things, what difference does it make? I am Christian and I'm proud of it. If I had one on my car, I'm saying I'm a follower of Christ and that's all. It doesn't make me better than you, it just means I know where I'm going when this life is over. Do you?

I've always been irritated by the fish, and amused by the variations people have come up with in response (Darwin Fish, Gefilte Fish). It just doesn't make sense, other drivers are much more likely to associate any bad driving with the symbol than they are to be remember it positively.

The baby on board is because of the fish man!
That's why you have to know... so you know where the baby on board sign came from.

Because the fish means being a fisher of men for Christianity. So that's kinda the point...to tell eveyone about Christianity and that you are proud to be a Christian.
