you can usually tell by signs , like do u ever dream that you were i pastor , if so were you happy being one , my religion believes that GOD will help you choose the right path you should take in order to be happy and successful. for instance in your dreams if you do see your self as a pastor and are in fact happy and having no problems then thats surely a sign that you should go for it , however be sure to pay attention closely to your dreams , if that doesnt work then you should keep praying and hopefully god will send you a sign some way some how hinting to you which path you should take .i really think this works!

--Is Catholic--

If Catholics feel that they have a vocation to the priesthood, they take their desire to the Church which then discerns for them whether or not the Holy Spirit is calling them to ministry. This is because the Holy Spirit is the spirit of the Church, and He allows the Church to recognize her own, thereby confirming what the individual was thinking was God. It is a function of the Church's charism of discernment. It is an involved process of spiritual discernment by the Church that takes years. The Church has the ability to reject a person at anytime during his training for the priesthood as well as the ability to "defrock" any consecrated priest.

-----is also a convert from Protestantism-----

This might sound like a slam but it is not. Protestants do not have varifiable a means for a 3rd party to determine whether or not God is actually calling them. The basic approach is 1.) Do I really like what my denomination teaches? 2.) Do I want to do this as my job? 3.) Am I so moved? aka Do I have a "fuzzy" feeling? The best that can be said is "This denomination agrees with X. If you agree with X and want to teach X then you have a calling". The other method that is used is, "We will pray about it, and if we "feel the spirit too" then you have a calling".

Now I have no way of telling you if you are called by God to be a pastor. However, I can tell you fairly easy if the feeling is just a feeling or if it is something not from God.

First people naturally have affinity towards things. People are naturally attracted towards the good and the good that they know. A Buddhist monk, a Muslim Imam, etc. are all going to give you the same basic story of why they felt they were called. This is just purely affinity towards what you know to be the good. It is not a direct personal calling by God.

You know it is just affinity towards what you know to be the good if it is just simply an attraction, even if it is very intense. It is perfectly fine to do something based on the attraction to the good, although you should be aware that this is not a direct personal calling.

Here is a basic list of "you do not have a calling".

You don't have a direct personal calling from God if
1. You really feel that only you can spread the Gospel.
2. "God" is calling you to spread this new idea.
3. It always has to be your way.
4. Your "calling" completely detracts you from the Christian life that you should be currently living.
5. You really hate this other group of people and you have just got to get out there and saved them.
6. If God told you to water a dead stick until it bared fruit, and you would not do it.
7. If you couldn't be a pastor if you never felt this "God feeling" again during your entire life.
8. If the ministry is a way to avoid some other obligation.

That is just a basic list. More help if you need it (message me). However, I will not tell you if you have a calling, just if there are indications if you do not.

if God was calling you to be a pastor you would know in your heart. No one can know when the time of your life is right to be a pastor.

I noticed that you also were asking about being an engineer or a doctor and how much they make. Well, pastors don't make much money. So I don't think you are right for the job if $$$ is important.

A pastor is called of God specifically for that purpose. When God calls men into the pastorate, He places within them an unmistakable desire to pursue that ministry. God also gifts men at the time of conversion to that for which He has called them. That spiritual gift(s) is a stewardship for which you are accountable to God. Peter indicated that believers are to use gifts "as good stewards of the manifold grace of God" (1 Peter 4:10). Not to exercise your gift properly is to fail one's stewardship. This fact inspired Paul's exhortation to Archippus, "Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it" (Colossians 4:17). So, besides a desire to serve in this capacity, one must also pursue the work of ministry, whatever that is within the local church, using the gifting God has given. Often by serving, God begins to direct us where He desires us to be.

Ministry is not confined to preaching and teaching. If a servant is faithful in his present involvement, he may then receive greater responsibility. God prepares men for the work of shepherding and places within them a special calling that they recognize from Him. If you are considering this and feel this call then I suggest that you seek God's direction and ask Him for His timing and grooming. God does not call you immediately into the pastorate, which is a high level of responsibility until you have proved yourself through your character. Paul instructed Timothy, who was a young pastor, "And let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons in they are beyond reproach" (1 Timothy 3:10). Granted, this is referring to deacons here and not pastors but the principle is the same. Not that a man must serve as a deacon or elder first, but as the principles of Scripture indicate, ones qualifications for a pastor are no different than that of elder or deacon. Faithful service and reputable character indicate that one is controlled by the Word of God, by the Spirit of God, for the work of God.

when he shows you signs. You'll know he's talking to you because you'll feel good every time you hear or feel his voice. If he's saying that your calling is to be a pastor then you have the choice to obey him

I don't think you heard God right.

He didn't "call on you to be a pastor".

He "called on you to quit getting plastered".
