Well now ,it is ironic that Toyota ,Honda, and Nissan can open up factories here in the USA and pay union scale on wages and benifits so there workers don't need unions to get the a fair shake and yet the big three want to move out of this country for cheaper labor and yet charge top dollar for their products without giving the AMERICAN CONSUMER a break on the MSRP by passing the savings on to you and meThe Big Wheels are lining their pockets with BIG BONUSES and bilking stockholders and employees, who by the way, are also stockholders through personal savings plans( Check the Wall St Journal for what executives are getting at Delphi while Delphi wants o cut hourly wages and jobs) If it wasn't for unions ,companies today wouldn't have health care for employees, overtime paid after 40 hrs worked, and holidays off with pay.Not to mention lunch breaks and coffee breaks. So before you write off Unions remember OSHA would not exist so that your working environment is safe for you. Look at third world birth defects compared to ours.Autoworkers have and still do work in and under hazardous conditions but with more safeguards in place to protect their health and yet our average lifespan is only 65yrs By moving operations outside the USA they can bypass or completely ignore health and safety reg. in place here without facing penalties for shortening the lives of workers over there GM employees and their suppliers and all connected to their operations provide 1,000,000 jobs in this country now It use to be closer to 30,000,000 back in the 70's Losing autoworkers and their paychecks effects everyone because we buy products others make or sewrvices ofered and our tax dollar provides civil service jobs too so that we all enjoy police and fire service as well as roads and public parks and other public services No taxes means a cut in federal jobs and services. Remember that the way the Japs have kept their emp. from going union is because they already pay union wages and union benifits to their emp and they have no problem turning a profit and sharing it stockholders

I'm so happy to see how many people on here have this all figured out. It is really a union problem. Honda and Toyota is building cars in America, but they don't have to mess around with the UAW. The only way that the domestics can avoid the UAW is to set up plants in other countries. Also, the foreign companies are building cars in the south central part of the country, where the cost of living is less, and they will gladly take a job that pays 25,000 a year, which is half of what some of the people in Detroit are making. The UAW is starting to get the idea, but they still have a lot of ground to make up.

Ford's been building out of the country for years.. Ford hasn't built a crown vic in the US since the early 1990s.
The unions did do service to the worker years ago and getting him benifits and wage salaries (that I wish I could make fixing the same things they F*ed up on the assembly line).. But the cost of those things had to go somewheres and it went to final production costs...
Everyone wants their piece of the pie now and that's why we got the fat cats who don't do nothing but get big salaries.. Same thing can be said of the floor boses and such too... just too much manufacturing overhead costs for not too many people wanting Ford Cars because they in the public's mind equal gas guzzler.
That and Ford had too many manufacturing lines for the same cars when only say 2 were need, as it was in the union contract to have say 4 lines building...
Delphi... Ok lets see, this was a GM subsitiary, that was spun off due to high costs is now selling parts to a lot more manuafacturers (including Ford) and are still in danger of closing due to costs.. hum...
I live in the south, the import companies learned the secrets of the US and applied them elsewhere... the price and benifits are a little lower than the union shops but the manufacturers know these are areas that won't unionize they are moving into if they keep the pay within a resonable spread of the union shop... The south wasn't a big union area.. Most of the south is a right to work area (unionization is not mandantory like in some places in the north).. Everytime they hint unionization the manufacturer does something to shut it up like poof, here is another dollar or two to your salary.... The shipbuilders were accused of the same wrong doing here in Louisiana to quash unions..
And I'll tell you, you are right about Ford, but you can pick a manufacturer and say the same crap about them,,, Hell I saw a pack of new Toyotas.. all built in Japan.. That my friend is globalization.. the Americans want too much for too little compared to the rest of the world..plain and simple...

The whole reason that I REFUSE to buy a Ford or GM is because I don't want to help support the retarded unions. How in the world is it fair that some drop out gets paid 40 - 50 K to do a job that anyone could learn in a couple of days when millions of people in other countries work 10 times harder, have had way less opportunity in their lives, and can't even feed their families - let alone buy houses, cars, etc. Don't worry tho - Labor unions in the US are almost dead!
BTW Ford/GMs days are numbered. I know of atleast 2 auto mfgrs (1 in China, 1 in India) that are planning to enter the US market with cars costing the buyer less than $6,500. GM pays almost 2,000 per car just to cover the cost of medical coverage for its employees!!! Th company in China pays an employee about $2,000 over his life time!!!! Forget these union chumps - if they want to keep making the kind of money they are getting now in 5 years they better get a degree!!!!!!

Are you blaming Ford for the fact that unions are so out of control and corrupt that they are forced to find labor outside of the country just to make an affordable car that competes with the Asian market?
Maybe the poor American auto workers don't need to make 35 dollars an hour to do the same jobs the rest of us do on a regular basis for less than half of that.
Hopefully before long there won't be a union and maybe work will return to this country.

It isn't Ford's fault. It's the union contractors trying to squeeze more money out for the union workers for better coverage and benefits. Who is it benefitting now? The UAW should follow them to mexico and try to set up a union there and see how it will benefit them. I guess now that Toyotas and Hondas that are built here in America are considered American cars now.

The big three have been outsourcing for 30yrs.Between the unions($42 an hour to install tires? + 20 paid days off) and wacky lawsuits (there wasnt a warning lable that said not to stick my hand in the fan, I want 3 million) I would not buy a mustang for $130,000 just because everything was made here.

Unions were needed in the 1900s to protect the worker, but not any more. They simply destroy businesses and artificially redistribute wealth out of a company and into the workers. Unions themselves are big businesses getting rich by collecting union fees and forcing employers to pay artificially inflated wages. We're a market-driven economy and unions kill it.

The union contracts made decades ago have bankrupt the auto industries. I don't like to see jobs go out of the U.S. either, but there is a limit to what they can do.. No company can pay people not to work and pay out pensions for more people than there are working.
