All he does is sit here all day, staring at the television, he'll stop and eat or go sleep, but other than that it's always the television, he won't let me watch anything unless there is nothing on that he wants to watch, he has a power chair and a walker but he'll only use them if he goes to buy more of his cigars, that's about it, does anyone know how to convince him to leave the apartment more often and stop watching tv?

I know this sounds mean.. but cut the power off.. Flip the breaker on the breaker box that feeds the power to that receptacle and make out like something is wrong with the TV. Worth a try and might work for a day or two. Other than that.. I have no clue. My husband could not function without his TV and he is 50. Frankly I think there is more to life than watching someone live theirs. Good Luck.

Get rid of the TV and tell him if he goes to buy another one you will crush it with a sledge hammer. He needs to start moving around. It's not meant for people to immobilize themselves like that. Once the TV is gone he will be forced to go outside but it is a little hot right now and that might be bad for him.

Offer to go for a walk with him, or take him to the ball park or some other place where he has shown interest in his earlier years. He could be depressed and needs help working through the depression. Do not criticize him but rather try to get him involved in some senior activities.

Cut the cable. Pull down the areal antenna. Break the tv. Might help.

wow, kinda reminds me of my dad, but older. My dad became very depressed soon after my mom died, which than I was 10. He went out a lot but only to the bars, we hardly saw him. It was just my little sister and I. Finally he realized what he was doing wrong, found himself another lady and got married, but than he fell back into depression, so he sat around a lot. He went to work, came home and sat in his room or slept, than when he left her, he was working more and going out more. So than I hardly seen him, but than he got older and sicker, my dad had emphazymia and could hardly breathe anymore. My dad died soon later after that. So maybe your dad/grandfather/husband just ain't feeling well or maybe very depressed. Get them excited to do things that they used to do, like play pool, guitar, puppies, etc... shut the tv off and tell him that you want to play a game of cards with him or something. Let's go out and check to see what things are, the elderly are just like children, sometimes you even gotta get them motivated like kids.
