First off love, Buddhism is not a religion, it's more like a way of life. My opinion would be to choose which way you can truly evolve with: Tibetan, or Zen Buddhism. Tibetan tends to be a bit more strict. You can also incorporate both into your life. Trust me, it's a wonderful way to live!

Why do you want to be a Buddhist?
Are you attached to a Buddhist group?
Do you have friends who practice Buddhism?
Buddhism is divided into two main streams, Hinayana and Mahayana.
Hinayana tends to stress the importance of a virtuous life while Mahayana offers various active routes to a better rebirth and ultimately to Nirvana.
By and large ritual is not central to Buddhist practice.
Important things include the eightfold path, and the practice of meditation.
There are hundreds of sacred Buddhist texts. I particularly like the Diamond Sutra. You can find an easy to understand version in (I think) An Introduction to Zen Buddhism by Dr DT Suzuki.
I say easy to understand, because many translations are burdened with all kinds of irrelevant bells and whistles which obscure the basic message.
The sutra concludes with the following:
"All composite things (samskrita)
Are like a dream, a phantasm, a bubble and a shadow,
Are like a dew-drop and a flash of lightning;
They are thus to be regarded."
