A diesel engine cannot run directly on cooking oil straight from the bottle bought at the local super market. Straight cooking/vegetable oil is too thick for modern engines, especially in regions with colder climates. Rather, the cooking oil must be combined with alcohol and a catalyst of some sort (source doesn't mention what kind of catalyst is used). In doing so, glycerin is separated out, thinning the oil and leaving behind 'bio-diesel' that can be used in a diesel engine. For colder climates, vehicles may need a separate heated tank to warm the cooking oil enough to used as fuel.

I have heard of several people using oil in this way. (there is a TV show on sky satellite discovery channel). Actually, the guy goes around hotels and restraunts collecting their old oil, filters it, and also does something else to it that I have forgotten. However, this "something else" whatever it is is actually quite an important step before you can use the oil in your engine as fuel. Also he has modified his car but just a little bit to take full advantage of it. Again I dont know the changes made, but I do know they are necessary and are only very simply and inexpensive. There are many websites on the subject.

It relies upon on what variety of engine you have. in case you have a diesel engine, then you definitely can use almost any liquid gasoline. even nonetheless, you may clear out and/or purify the oil first. once you are going to run it with used cooking oil, you may clear out all the little good debris recent in it. They even did this on the Mythbusters and it labored.

I have never heard of Diesel engines being sold at any neighborhood supermarket, regardless of the type of fuel they burn. An engine dealer would be a better place to look.
