It's the British Isles.
It's a group of islands that includes the landmass with England, Scotland & Wales. This title also includes Ireland, and lots of other smaller islands including the Isle of Wight, the Isle of Mann etc.
I have no idea what the person referring to Europe is on about!

You are confusing geographical with political. The island is Britain. The countrys full title is United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so Great Britain does not include Northern Ireland.
Why Great?, originally called it to distinguish from the other Britain,now called Brittany in France

I lived in England for four years and asked this questions to my british friends. I was told that they are all referred as Great Britain.

The answer is Britain, as mentioned before if you add Northen Island it is then referred to as the United Kingdom.
Hey Matt_Gunzelman take a geography lesson, Europe includes France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria etc, etc and is generally not considered to be an island. Big duh, dude!!
