I used abreva a few times and it worked just like it said it should BUT then after a few times it made it WORSE!!! I get cold sores a lot and the best thing for them is this one kind of chapstick (sorry I dont even know the name) but its at target and its in a blue tube with a screwtop with the twisty thing at the top and its like $3. It says on the box that its for coldsores. I will never switch again. my doctor made me get medicine from her because last time I was at the doctor I had one, but I havent had to use it yet so I dont know how that will work, but I would just try the chapstick.

My husband gets cold sores all summer long, from the sun. He uses Abreva and it works great for him. As soon as he feels the burn of a cold sore coming on he starts applying the Abreva, about 4 times a day. If you catch it in time the cold sore won't even come out. If it does, try Campho Phinique.

Never heard of putting ice on it.

I find that if I apply campho phenique at the very first tingle on my lip and I think it may develop into a cold sore yes it does stop the actual sore from appearing. I have not tried abreva but I'm pretty sure this will work the same way.

I have never tried abreva but I used too get cole sores a couple times a year I heard about lysine and I tell you this stuff is fantastic. whenever I feel one comin on I start popping lysine like candy and it is usually gone by the next day. it doesn't even turn into a full sore. and since it's a vitamin, i haven't had one in a bout 5 years. My friend used to get them constantly and I told him about it and now he hasn't had one in a few years.

Try aloe vera. The real stuff, from the plant. Not that fake bottled crap.
