I'm undecided whether to buy a good mixer or food processor as I want something which will whisk/beat cake batters and make bread dough and possibly pastry. The dicing and slicing would be great!

Think about what you're going to be using it for the majority of the time... and go with the one that seems most suitable!

I don't mind chopping/slicing things... Can never be bothered to get out the food processor to do it anyway! If you're chopping stuff with it, you might find it completely minces some parts of it and then barely chops others.. it's better just to cut them by hand.

I have a Kenwood cake mixer and use it for everything... cookies, cakes, dough, pastry etc... it's brilliant! It comes with a whisk for doing meringue or pavlova, dough hook for breads and then general mixer for everything else, I would definately recommend it!

i recently read ( maybe in the Washington Post) that food processors push food out, against the walls, but that blenders pull food in and around; hence, you can blend better in a blender ( WOW. COOL. imagine that.) but liquid is required.

ANYWAY,
i have all 3 , and use them for different stuff. but the food processor is too big to keep on my kitchen counter all the time, and the blades/wheels can be a pain to clean.

-Blender for liquids.
-Mixer for cakes, cookies, cheese bread. whipping stuff, like egg whites.

If i could only get one, i would get a medium size food processor, if it came in a size that was good for my counter. if i didn't expect to make a lot of things that required whipping eggs and/or making meringue.

Every food processor I tried doesn't chop.... They make a paste or cut uneven. I hate them! I had to return everything I tried, gave up and got a cutting board.

my food processor won't do ice. And it tends to over chop sometimes, making things the texture of homeade baby food!!

sometimes food processors mix things up too fine. I made mashed potatoes in one and they were whipped like whipped cream.
