I am getting a root canal done tomorrow and then another one done in 6 months. The other one has a temporary filling and is not painful for me. However I don't know if I want to wait that long? My endodontist said he will put some more temporery filling. Is that okay? Also, what is it like getting a root canal? Can anyone compare it to a filling? I heard from people that it was long but not painful.

No, it is not painful. The only pain you'd ever feel is the pain of injection at the very beginning. After that, it is just annoying as it takes 30 minutes or so for the digging part.

Usually, the dentist will do the root canal, put a tempoary filling, build up, then take a mold, then finally put a crown.

It's nothing to worry about - it's just long and expensive.

Getting a root canal done really won't feel much different to you than it does getting a filling done. There are a couple of bad things about root canals....they are boring and you have to have your mouth open for a long time. I would recommend that you take a CD player or IPOD to listen to and then take some Ibuprofen before the appointment (this will help your jaw feel better later). Having a root canal done by an endodontist is they way to go, in my opinion. They only do root canals, all day every day, so it goes much quicker. If he says that waiting 6 months will be ok with this other tooth, than you should be ok, but if you can afford to get it done sooner, I'd say go for it. Good luck

If you are seeing an endodontist the root canal should not take longer than hour & the only pain you should feel is from the injection. In regards to waiting 6 months for the other root canal, you are taking a chance. You may get an infection or worst case, the decay could get worse & you end up getting the tooth extracted.

I have had 4. They don't hurt at all because you get Novacaine. The worst part is actually getting the shot to numb you. Plus I hate the feeling when the Novacaine wears off. It's just odd. To avoid it, after root canals, I go home and take a nap. If anything is sore, it will be where the needle when in your gums to numb you. If for some reason your tooth does hurt after a root canal, call your dentist. This happened to me once (I found out that I had an infection in a nearby tooth, so once they relieved the pain with a root canal I could feel the pain of the other tooth).

I've had 3 root canals done, all by a different endodontist. The one in Mexico was far and away the best and least painful. The operation takes an hour to an hour and a half..

I wouldn't wait six months. I once had a root canal ,and I had to go to the dentist every Monday for more work on it. I skipped one week because it was my birthday, I woke up one morning with my face so swollen that my eye wouldn't open and my nose was pushed to one side but no pain. When I went to the dentist that day, he removed the temporary filling and all the infection came running out of the hole in the tooth. It was finished that day. There was never any pain.

It is a long procedure, and if you have a good dentist/endodontist it's not painful. They should give you a lot of deadening shots and gas. The gas will make you goofy and you really won't care what else is going on. More than anything, you end up feeling kinda traumatized at having had your mouth held open with rubber stays for hours.
Your dentist knows best on the temp filling thing. You should be fine on that.
Best of luck! :)

Maybe he wants to wait 6 months, because then it would be 2007 and you'll be in a new insurance year... Just speculation on my part. I don't know of any clinical reason to say at the outset that you should wait 6 months between having root canal treatment on two different teeth.

I HAVE HAD 3 ROOT CANALS AND WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO HAVE A GREAT DENTIST. HE WAS VERY GENTLE AND I SINCERELY FELT NO PAIN. IT CAN BE NON PAINFUL WHEN YOU HAVE A DECENT DENTIST WHO TAKES THEIR TIME TO `SHOOT` YOU UP. A TEMP IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT EITHER, ITS NOT LIKE A ROOT C. AND SHOULDN'T BE PAINFUL. I DIDN'T THINK IT TOOK THAT LONG... FROM MY EXPERIENCE.
