Could it be because it's basically a vegetable and comes from a plant that looks a lot like corn, or is from sugar beets, which are like the beets you don't like to eat? Raw sugar smells a lot better, actually, than does processed sugar. Processed sugar has much of the part of the cane that is the tastiest taken out of it. Raw sugar is golden colored, has a rich texture, and tastes almost like honey. It smells as good as all that, too. Five pounds of process sugar is like five pounds of flour, or almost, about is poor smelling. You can buy raw sugar in some stores in packets or by the pound. It is more soluble than processed sugar, better for baking and dissolves in drinks easily. I worked in the Florida sugar cane growing area for four years as a youth adviser. Try some raw cane, you'll like it, even its smell.

Probably smells because you can't spell.
Have you ever heard of 'i before e, except after c'?
It's weird, but receipt

Buy new sugar, it shouldn't smell. AND store it in an airtight container.
