No but it really helps. It actually trains you so you can learn how to train them.

I do not live in your area, so I can't recommend anyone, but call local vets in your area and see if there is anyone they recommend. I think obedience school is wonderful. It gives the dog something to do, and they are learning at the same time. All places are different, but in a basic beginner obedience you usually learn sit, down, stay, come and heel. In an Intermediate type class you will continue with these, and also some new things such as possibly drop on recall, out of site come when called etc etc etc. In Advanced, you would continue on, with off leash work. Check local trainers and see if you can sit in on a class and watch. I know the place I go to allows this, so you can pick which class is appropriate for you and your dog. Good luck and have fun!

Yes I would say that attending an obedience course is a good idea, but at a training club, rather than at a pet shop. YEs there are many videos online, but there is nothing to beat having help there and then, in person. It also provides the puppy great opportunity to mix woth other dogs and with strange humans. And the training clubs run as charities/non-profit organisationswill probably be a lot less than $120. The club i attended charged £3.50 per week ,with a £10 join-up/membership fee, so for the first ten weeks it was a total of £45 (about $70USD), but if you wanted to cary on with more classes, it was just £3.50 per week, your membership lasted a year.

It's not necessary if you know how to train your dog. Often people go to obedience are geared toward training the human how to train the dog, instead of focusing only on the dog. Obedience classes usually focus on the basics such as sit, stay, lay down, and come. Try and find a class that uses the positive reinforcement method. Ask your vet or local animal shelter if they know of any good obedience classes in your area.

First, it's not training for dogs, it's really training for you.
It help you so that you can communicate with your dog. It also helps you bond with your dog as you're by giving your dog commands, the dog does them, receives praise, etc. you're creating a relationship with them.
Obedience training is important regardless of the size of dog or breed, just for the communication, bonding and fun you get to have with each other.

You can train your dog yourself, without an obedience school. You can buy books that really help. I have trained my two brittany spaniels myself. One of them was sent to an obedience school by her former owners, but by the time I got her she was running wild again and would only "sit." Commands like heel, sit, stay, down, and come are taught.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/qadDG
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

If you don't know how to train a dog, then take a class. It will teach you how to train.
I know how to train a dog, but never seem to find the time. So I always take a class. It forces me to make time to get the dog trained.
