Lighting darkness, with fate unblest, I soon devolve to shapeless mess.

It's man's cycle of life

In the morning (or early part of his life) he walks on four legs because he's a infant

In the afternoon (or middle years) he walks on twe legs because he's learned how to walk

In the evening (or the end) he's an old man, and walks on three legs because one of those ''legs'' is a cane.

Isn't a man? He crawls on his hands and knees in the morning of his life, he walks upright in the afternoon of his life, and walks on two legs and a cane in the evening of his life? I never did get that one.
