Before the Romans became Christians, they were for the most part pagans who worshiped many God's for various things with one main God over all(Zeus, Odin, etc).
That is why there are "saints" that are prayed to for help in different things in the Catholic faith, the old gods were simply replaced and Jesus was added.
If you actually read there are very few original thoughts or happenings in either the Old or the New Testament. Crucifixion, 12 followers, born on Dec 25, the great flood, raising from the dead, all occur in the Egyptian and Greek worship.
A very good book is "The Greatest Story Ever Sold", about all of the things in Christianity that are merely renamed ancient "fables".

The Romans, like the Greeks, had various religions, all of them pagan. So the Romans were pagans until the advent of Chistianity. Until the Catholic Church was formed, two to three hundred years after Jesus's death, many of the Romans were simply Chritstians or pagans, not to mention the Jews who were part of the city. When the Catholic Church did begin, everyone didn't magically become Catholic. The conversion of the city's and country's citizenry to Cahtolicism took place over the next couple of centuries.

The Holy Lands were ruled by the Roman Empire at the time of Christ. That is why Christ was bought before Pilate. That is why Christ said "give to Caesar what is Caesar's" when asked about serving God and the emperor.
I'm not a bible thumper, but most of this could be learned just by watching Ben-Hur.

That's a JOKE right? Roman Catholics. What a hoot. Romans from the time of Christ were basically PAGANS. You really asked that question? Roman Catholics......has NOTHING to do with romans. :-) Rome is where VATICAN CITY is located. What a hoot. Catholic means UNIVERSAL. You are talking about the UNIVERSAL CHURCH housed in Vatican City in ROME, ITALY. I know you were just joking but it was quite a play on words. :-)
