Talk to people and get to know them. Make friends early on and doan be too shy. Become more socially active to build you self confidence. Find clubs and activities that interests you. I joined marching band in high school the summer before my freshmen year and learned that I loved it. I met my best friends there.
Academically, you need to be on top of your stuff if you are not already. Which means you need to develop good study habits and learn how to manage time well. These skills come over time, but if you discipline yourself to get the job done and know how to use your time wisely, you will surprised with how much you can do in a short amount of time-- learn to push your own limits. This way you get a sense of self satisfaction and you feel good about yourself.
And lastly, stay away from drugs and alcohol for at least a couple of years, because I have seen substance abuse by immature people eventually ruin their lives. Personally, I feel that people eventually do experiment with drugs or alcohol. People always tell you that they are bad things but in reality all they do is help you escape reality for a short period of time. And if you arent mature enough to understand that these substances are only intended for moderate use then you should not do it period.
Which brings this back around to the original point. Finding the right friends will greatly increase your chance to be successful in high school. I found the right crowd because we always pushed each other to do well in school--which, at the end of the day, is the most important thing in high school. No one wants to find out that they cant be accepted into any universities/colleges or fall short of hopeful careers because they spent the last three years just going through the motions in high school.
Learn to push yourself, find activities and classes, that you would really enjoy doing, and find some good friends and you will do fine.

Beat up the biggest guy there or become someone's b*tch...wait that's prison...oh well close enough.
My advise (honestly) steer clear from the party scenes. Take your studies seriously, make friends, have fun but the drugs and the alcohol are going to screw things up for you in the future. So be careful unless you want to act like a dumb high school party boy your entire life. I know 30 year olds that still act like they're in HS. They work idiotic jobs, barely making rent because of the money they spend on drugs and alcohol.
If you can make it through HS relatively unscarred, the rest of your life should follow suit.

Know that what you're about to embark upon will set the pace well into your adulthood in life. If you come in being irresponsible, then you'll get irresponsible returns.
Do try to become involved in extra-curriculum activities, they can become your stepping stones to success. Don't try to become a people pleaser. High school can be brutal, people find out about weakness and strengths in others rather quickly.
Do not try to become "best" friends too soon. Find out where people's heads, attitudes, goals, desires etc. are before you align yourself with them.
Don't sleep around, it could be bad for your health...Word.
Peace Out.

Don't smoke weed during the school year. Have many friends and go to parties but don't let extracurricular activites prevent you from getting great grades. You don't want to be 40 and working as a shop-rat.

Just work on trying to be a good student. Remember the main reason why you're there, to get an education. Friends are great, too, just be wary in your choosing of people to associate with.

Make sure you go.....don't succumb to peer pressure.....and BE YOURSELF, don't worry about always fitting in. Everyone is as insecure as you are and are usually putting up a front so they don't seem like that.
Also...STUDY! If you don't have good study habits now, make them! The sooner the better.
