Are you talking about a requirement? A limit would mean no cop could be over 35. Setting age criteria is a waste of time some cops are just as good or bad at 28 as they will be at 48 and vice versa.

Oh boy...then we should raise the age for the military to 35 so we don't have all of these twenty somethings running around with guns killing people with visions of "Saving Private Ryan" running through their heads?
Most departments have policies these days that new police recruits have to have at least an associates degree to join the department. This serves to get better educated and more mature people on the force.
By the way, I don't know how much police experience you have, but I can inform you that as a retired police officer, the last thing running through your head when chasing someone is a TV show, cop show or otherwise. You're thinking about whether or not the person you are chasing has a gun or not. And, if you do know the person has a gun, you're thinking if you are going home at the end of your tour. One more thing, youth is a big advantage when it comes to chasing people and jumping over barriers. After all, police work is not like Starsky and Hutch, it's real and dangerous.

I don't think that would be a good idea, but I think it would be an excellent idea to let veteran cops handle the tough stuff with guns and send the rookies out with a stun/taser gun to minor situations. In my city, the rookie cops get killed more often than not, especially during late night routine traffic stops. This would ensure at the least that those who are handling the tought situation are used to them and probably better able to judge when and when not to shoot a citizen. It truly does scare me how police of any age, sex, racial background, social class, experience level can carry a gun for use at will. There is nothing to stop the police from shooting innocent citizens. With this respect, I wish we could go back to an eye for an eye society. I think that if a police who is entrusted to protect the public at large unjustifiably kills someone...they should be lined up on a firing squad and shot. This would make them guy shy, but then again, that's what we need for the most part. I think they should also have "special" forces for dealing with extremely violent criminals who have a history of using guns/weapons. We have a special task force for bombs and drug raids, why not extremely violent criminals with a proven history for killing/hurting people?

are you crazy! 35 and just starting. listen we need the youth and enthusiasm that goes with youth. OK, now having said that we also need 35 and 40 years or more for the experience. like it or not nothing beats age for experience. who leads, certainly not a fresh 35 year old. no, restrictions on police are great enough. maybe to great, however we have what we have. police in other parts of the world would really make you say hmmmmmm.

That would mean that young police officers chasing people would be more likely to get shot because the person being chased would be more likely to fire if he/she knows the police officer would not be able to respond in kind.

Therefore, although I find it slightly scary to see young people (police or military) carrying guns, I don't think an age restriction is a good idea.

Federal agencies already have that in practice. I am 41, small framed female and I can do what it takes to hire on with a police agency. I just get paid more doing private protection than most police officers.

Age limits ??? NO WAY. it is a fact that you learn things better when you are younger. anyway age has no relevance in this question as it is based on one's ability to do a job.A 30 y.o. might be a better shooter or cop than a 35 y.o. they are trained and tested to a high standard so if they pass, they pass. regardless of age.

While the 35 year old are now only learning a new skill the 14+year old nut jobs are gifted at theirs.

Giving them a mental evaluation would be a better policy.
