try visiting www.nethomehelp.co.uk for free firewalls's and virus scanners, i personally use avast home edition as
1/ it is totally free of charge, and monitors all open connections that you have (even monitors yahoo/msn instant messengers, and most p2p sharing applications)
2/ it detects virus's inbuild into webpages, so you can decide before the page opens if you should open it or not,
of course you check the other free virus scanners that are in the virus section.
spyware (not spywear) is Internet jargon for Advertising Supported software (Adware). It is a way for shareware authors to make money from a product, other than by selling it to the users. There are several large media companies that offer them to place banner ads in their products in exchange for a portion of the revenue from banner sales. This way, you don't have to pay for the software and the developers are still getting paid. If you find the banners annoying, there is usually an option to remove them, by paying the regular licensing fee.
so basically if you have downloaded programs with spyware/adware inbuild into them there is not much you can do to remove them, but, if you again visit www.nethomehelp.co.uk there are a few programs there like ad aware, spybot, spyware blaster that can remove 'some' of them. (i guess you have GAIN supported programs on your computer as they are the main ones)
if you have a legal copy of windows XP then get 'windows defender' a microsoft product, there is a link in the www.nethomehelp.co.uk website.
if your worried that you can't get them because .co.uk is a uk based website do not worry they can still be downloaded for free
browse around on that site, all is free
