Any Sony or Nikon that u think is affordable.

Nikon Coolpix L4 $125, 4 Mega Pixel, 3x Optical Zoom, 16MB Installed Memory.

Nikon Coolpix S5 $300, 6 Mega Pixel, 3x Optical Zoom, 16MB Installed Memory.

Both are high quality, very compact and easy to use. But, buy a good case, I don't think any digital camera on the market would survive being dropped.

I'm looking at Nikon's D200 SLR Digital camera, oooh soooo nice!

Most of them are either camera company's cameras (Fuji, Pentax, Nikon, Canon, Olympus) or a Sony (which some sony's are using a carl zeiss lens (very good optics)

I like the idea of looking ap the pentax series, however the 33wr is discontinued and has been replaced with the WPi and W10 waterproof series (higher megepix and 3 ft underwater capable)

Also Consumer reports are about 3-6 months BEHIND on their reviews as they have to write the articles in advance of printing and 1/3 of the cameras have been replaced by the time the article comes out. 3-6 months in a compact camera and us in the buisiness may already know whats replacing it

I love the two Olympus cameras I've had. They're as easy to use as a cheap point & shoot camera. The cost for one of the lesser models can probably run $199 - 299 + larger digital card and lithium rechargeable batteries.

The reason I am keen on it is that I never read the instructions for either the camera or the software and it works very well.

That might be a little high for you, but perhaps your folks can find a bargain somewhere.

I have a Kodak EasyShare. It is easy to use and the software is simple. My kids have dropped mine and it still works.
