Funny, most of Europe is multi lingual. They embrace speaking different languages. Sweden for example, recognizes three languages, no one has their panties in a twist about it?....

Its only in this country it is frowned upon, why is that? I guess people are closed minded and do not want to accept that there may be another majority, what do you fear people?

It should shut them down. English should be THE language of commerce and official transactions. Just as Spanish should be for all things official in Mexico.
The bilingual programs should be replaced by a well rounded general, foreign language curriculum.
English should be made the legal language of the USA, and there should be compulsory 2nd language fluency in our schools.
The "Stupid and Racist" preamble to the question is in poor taste. It is leading. It is not about race, (although some people on BOTH sides would like it to be). My family maintained our native tongue, but learned standard English as soon as possible, in order to make our way in this country. It is only common sense. It is racist to expect an entire country to change for a few.

I don't think it's necessarily racist.

I think immigrants should be encouraged to learn English. And by making English the official language, that would just make everything more simple.

Immersion really is the best way to learn a language. I have always wanted to learn Spanish, but I have found that taking Spanish classes in school does virtually nothing. We memorize endless lists of words, but we don't actually use them in conversation because we don't know how. The best way to learn is by talking with native speakers.

Should the immigrants who can't speak English be told to get out? Absolutely not.

IT TAKES TIME TO LEARN A LANGUAGE!!!

This is one thing that really annoys me about the anti-illegal stance. They're all "Learn English or get out!". But a language takes YEARS to master. What happens if someone has only been here a few months, but are trying to learn English? Should they be told to get out, too, because they're not perfect at it or still have a strong accent? Did your ancestors from Irish or Germany automatically speak perfect, accent-free English when they stepped foot on Ellis Island?

If English is made more prevalent, then the immigrants will only learn faster.

What makes it racist? France has French as it's official language, is that racist? Mexico has Spanish; are they racist? Brazil has Portuguese...they're racist too? I could go one and on and on. You're so dead wrong on this one. Yes, it will affect the bilingual programs. It's been proved for decades they do not work and the are really expensive to implement.

I agree with the law of making English the unifying language. We are America and if people don't want to speak English, then they should go back to where they came from. We don't need some law to cater to foreigners who live here

Should Korea print everything in English for us? Does Mexico print everything, including government paperwork, in English for our convenience? Nope.

If you're going to live in the US, learn English. Period. Don't burden the taxpayers with additional costs or screw up the school system with having to have two of everything for ESL.
