I know that I sound like a crusty old teacher (I'm not; I'm in my twenties), but why is the spelling so poor on this site, and so many others ? Is it deliberate or is it that so few people can spell these days ?
Surely we (the UK) have an education system that teaches us how to use apostrophes correctly and how to spell the most common words.

"Surely we (the UK) have an education system that teaches us how to use apostrophes correctly and how to spell the most common words"
Actually, we don't.
We have an education system which insists on teaching children how to read and write phonetically, completely ignoring the fact that we don't have a phonetic language. Hence, we now have one of the lowest rates of school leavers able to read and write to a reasonable level since WWII.
As for why spelling on this site (and most other internet fora) is so poor... most of the time it's either haste, ignorance or pure laziness. Take your pick.

Don't care too much about that. It's the same on the french forum &, without pretention, I guess it's the same in whole forums. It's a problem of generation I think & not only in your country. Just knowing what you mean, not seeing if you write correctly. Most of time I try to remain tolerant but sometimes I do not. It's like that. Someone on the french forum has said that in 10 years people who can write correctly could be considered as scientist. I agree with that opinion but my optimism say that it will be not that way.
Keep cool & stay tolerant.

I am an English teacher and have found that many international posters write very poorly because they are EAL (English as an Additional Language). Americans also post using poor language.
Younger people don't bother with focussing on correct grammar in web-based conversation; just as people who speak 'correctly' at work use slang and swear in the pub, the teenagers I work with write correctly in essays but in 'e-shorthand' online or in notes. It is just one of those things- perhaps they don't notice how many people can 'see' them or don't care because they are disguised by user names.
Please excuse any poor typing- I'm not so hot on fast typing.

It's due to the fact that IM'ing and text messaging have started taking over the language. Or it could be the fact that some people are just to lazy to type everything out. And yes, one of the most common reasons is that some schools are trying to teach spelling by phonics.

I think many people are lazy and there is no real emphasis on grammatical accuracy or spelling. So may people use text-messaging and quick emails that they forget to use proper structure. It's sad. Even in a professional business situation, I'm constantly amazed at the very poor emails I receive.

Because the education system is not longer driven by results, just by the 'effort' that they put in. Result....poor spelling, even worse grammer, puctuation that makes a mockery of the language and the new fad of TXT. "WOT D U THK 2 THT"
ps. There is NO spaces required in front of your '?'. It should be: "Is this a question?"

To be fair, I think a lot of people are rushing and so aren't bothered with accuracy. Throw in the fact that I am dyslexic and it is a wonder that anyone can read my posts at all!
Having said that, is it really so hard to click "check Spelling" before posting?!

if you look to the general public on the internet for decent spelling and grammar; your kidding yourself. most people are in a rush and honestly if you can still read it with all imperfections, you shouldn't worry. It's not like anyone on Yahoo answers is filling out a job application or writing a term paper

It is the fast-paced society that we live in. It is easier to type "U" than it is to type "YOU."
Plus with text messaging it makes your msg (message) shorter so one can include more into just one msg (message), instead of having to divide it into 2 (two) or 3 (three) different msgs. I don't think my English teacher would appreciate it very much, but I think it should be safe to use abbreviations on "the net." ;-)
