A big smile, a ton of patience, and the ability to count change properly.
Oh and the knowledge that there is always a manager you can call for help, if someone in line is having a bad day and taking it out on you. =)

There are several things needed, but a pleasant attitude is pretty much number one. A pleasant attitude and willingness to work are essential. I was a courtesy clerk for a few years back in the late 80's and early 90's. The customers loved me. I learned to put on a performance. Of course, I didn't put cans on top of eggs or bread or any of the common things you don't do. However, I would flip cans and even go behind the back at times - usually with smaller cans. The managers loved me and would call me in when people were out. TAKE PRIDE IN WHAT YOU DO!! Seeing you ask, seems to signify that you do.
The keys to my success were:
1) Using two hands as it makes you go faster;
2) Always smile and greet the customer;
3) Always offer a carry out (i.e. Would you like help out with that?);
4) When you're done with an order - move to the next register;
5) When you do price checks - hurry up - don't walk;
6) If you are replacing a dented can or damaged item - same as #5 - hurry up - don't walk;
7) I suggest doubling bags as a general principal - I know managers and such tell you not to, but customers appreciate it. Asking is the best practice!!;
8) Be presentable at work. Sagging may be comfortable, but it's not presentable. Braids - they're cool as long as they are kept up. Most stores ask you to shave - please do. Tuck shirts where applicable. Wear name tags. All these are to make the customer feel more comfortable.
9) Don't curse or use slang while doing your thang. Customers that are not used to your slang can become REAL uncomfortable when this is done. TRUST!!; and
10) Do yourself a favor - be on time: a little early. I hate to see someone running in to work and then starting on my order all tired and sweaty and stuff.
The final suggestion I give is not to be a good courtesy clerk, but to be a good employee FOR YOU - try to learn those produce codes. If you learn those and show some dependability, you may get promoted to cashier soon. :-)
FYI - I was employee of the month for 18 consecutive months. So much so that they started giving two out per month - one was MINE and the other for the next closest person. And know that I never kissed any butt to get there - I was just GOOD!!

You should be mentally disabled, sort of unkempt, and talk a mile a minute about nothing.
These same qualifications are also necessary if you choose to work at the deli counter.

the need for speed to carry on your needs. a fast stacker is a tip payed sacker. but beware of the old and grocery sensitive customers.
