I have long (past my shoulders), wavy hair. I dyed my hair black 3 months ago and I got sick of the color. So I dyed my hair a medium brown color a week ago...and only the roots changed color.

I want my hair to be brown...my natural hair color is dark brown...but I don't want to wait for my hair to grow out...For my hair length, how much time & cost would it be to go to a salon and get this problem fixed?

Since I have dyed my hair so many times, should I just leave it alone?

I did that several times.

Best bet would be go to a salon and take $100 with you. Or you could do it at home in your own double-process. If you have dyed your hair at home alot, you will know what to do.

Get what is known as a "Lift Kit." I know they have them near the haircolor, and they look scary and old-fashioned. They are. They smell like egg farts. They use sulfur to break the color bond in your hair. Leave it on "up to three hours", under plastic, while it dissolves the protien in your hair. The color will go from black to brown to red to gold to white. Get as close to gold/white as you can, even if it feels you are leaving it on too long. It will get hot. It might burn a little bit. Some hair might fall out. You rinse and condition, and cry because your hair feels like straw.

Then you apply the color of your choice back over your now lifted and awful hair. It won't take long for the color to set, and pick a color 3 shades lighter than what you want because it takes really strong over "lifted" hair. Keep an eye on it, and rinse it out when it looks right, not the time on the box. It will now feel rubbery and you will cry harder. Put the special conditioner on it that came with your hair color, leave it on for a long time, rinse it out, and put a little more in and leave it there. Your hair will feel better after conditioning it. If you keep it conditioned, in about 3 weeks it will feel almost normal again.

And from now on, try to stay within 3 shades either direction of your natural color.

Best of luck.

Unfortunately, black is the worst color you could ever dye your hair! If you want to change your hair color back to normal, or lighter than the black, I would highly suggest going to a salon and have it professionally done. You don't want to use an at home stripping kit...you could actually end up damaging your hair more and there is a possibility that your hair could break off at the new hair growth (the place that took the hair dye recently). I know sometimes cost can be hindering, but it's best to save and have it done instead of doing more damage. :) Good Luck!

DON'T get your hair stripped. It's terrible for your hair. To lighten it, you could use liquid dish soap (just lather it into your hair) or a baking powder paste (add a little bit of water to baking powder and put it on your hair and let it sit for a few minutes).

Soap and Baking Powder are a hell of a lot cheaper than going to the salon and having it fixed professionally. The salon will probably charge you upwards of $100. If those don't work and you aren't completely uncomfortable with your hair color, just let it fade. You could probably also try sitting in the sun.

I did kind of the same thing once, and just waited a few weeks to go to the salon and get it fixed. with black, they have to bleach the color out of your hair completely, and then they dye it whatever color you want (for me, it was about $60). Still, just give your hair a break for a bit, and it should be healthy enough to dye again.

in case your colour is fading out that quick, you're probably making use of a semi everlasting colour or demi everlasting colour. you could attempt what's termed everlasting colour, which wont fade yet will advance out with your hair, so each 4-8 weeks youd only might want to get a retouch. I reccommend going to a salon and having it done professional rather than paying for keep offered colour. also, i'd shrink back from thoroughly black, as quickly because it everlasting black its very demanding to get the different colour, along with brown. desire this enables!
