My daughter learned her ABCs at 18-20 months, and at 23 months can now recite them with little problem, and also knows how to count to 10. I've tried looking to see what the average age is for a child to learn their ABCs but to no avail. Is she early in learning them?

Thats pretty early. I know a lot of kids learn them in preschool (3 yrs), and there are some kids who do not learn them until kindergarten. There is such a vast range in development with young kids, so its hard to pinpoint a "normal" age and even though most kids learn them at 3 or 4 that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with a child who doesn't learn them untl 5 yrs old. Your child sounds like she is pretty far advanced though - keep working with her! I would start next with teaching her to recognize the letters and numbers by sight, and especially out of order. Make some flash cards of them and start with her reciting them in order and then when she has that down shuffle them. Keep up the good work!

Sounds like your daughter is doing great! My older daughter was the same way -- knew all her letters before she turned two. She has always been interested in reading books and learning letters, numbers, colors, etc. She's now 3 years old, knows the sounds of all the consonants, can read a handful of words, can write her name (and several other capital letters), is learning the lower case letters that we haven't talked about much, does some simple addition/subtraction, counts to at least 30 (up to 100 with help), and reads 2-digit numbers. We have honestly just followed her lead every step of the way. When she's interested in something, we practice it with her. My younger daughter is 21 months old, and she doesn't know any of her letters, colors, or numbers -- completely opposite of my older daughter. However, she's much more physical and social than my older daughter was at this age. They're just completely different kids, and their strengths/weaknesses will even out in time. I don't know the answer to your question about average ages, but keep up the good work!

My daughter learned her ABC around the same time she i 2 now and has no problem reciting them she even remembers the little song. She learned to count around 18 months and now she can count up to 20. I guess there really isn't' t a specific time when they learn things, It's up to the parents or caregivers to take the time and teach them. We have to realize that they are much more capable than we are to learn things and remember them

I had a daughter who learned at 25 months old and one who didnt learn them until she was 3 1/2. It really depends on the child because we worked with both of them the same amount on that type of stuff.

my oldest could recite his perfectly at about 19 months. my middle son was just over 2. my daughter is 16 months and she is nowere near even close to knowing them (or any word that isnt daddy for that matter). All kids are different, you shouldnt have any expectations about when they should be doing things as long as they are on track developmentaly (which the doctor can tell you) adn are ready for school whhen the time comes

that's pretty good. My daughter is just over 2 and is doing them pretty well, but she likes to sing along rather than recite them herself.

She's really just starting to sing songs a lot, so probably soon. Definately counting to 10 is about right, too for this age.

It's wonderful..she's catching on, doing well.. keep up the challenging mind stimulation (without pushing her, of course)

that's average I would say. My daughter was that old when she started with the abcs. Encourage her further. Do flash cards with the letters on them. Ask her how many cherrios you have, etc. It's never too early to start with her. Congrats and good luck

That's great your a good daddy. I think my children learned them around 3 or 4. It really depends on how much you say them, your daughter wants to please you so she'll learn things like letters and numbers quickly as long as you work on them daily together. Keep up the good work your doing a great job, and yes she is early.

I was 24 months old, and was always told that is good by my mother. I'm not sure what the average age is, but it sounds like you're daughter is doing well. Congratulations!

They learn around pre-school age. My daughter learned them early to and then forgot by the time she was four. Her school told me it was common for children to learn them and then forget them again until they go to school.
