Cats, I'm not sure, but we had a dog who didn't know how to bark until we got another dog who provided the example for him. (Thanks a lot, little guy.:)
Our kittens made more of a squeak sound, but now it's becoming more of a "meow". I don't know if that's because their mother meows every time she approaches them, because their vocal chords are developing enough to meow, or a combination.

It probably has to do with the shape of the windpipe, instinct, and mother cats and dogs teaching their puppies/kittens what noises to make and how to communicate.

Because cats do not want dogs to know what they are talking about, and dogs keep complaining saying "oouch, oouch . . ."

Probably for the same reason we all make the same kind of noise when we laugh, the world over, no matter what language we speak.

Why do we speak and sound the way we do? It's just the noise they naturally make. Not entirely sure why.

actually they dun, find a new-born kitten or puppy and talk to it everyday. In a week they'll speak standard english.
