As on "Myth Busters" ( a television show here in the U.S. ) using the air conditioner in your car DOES use more gas than not using it HOWEVER, rolling down your cars windows ( instead of using your cars a/c ) uses more gas than using the a/c.

While the cycling of the a/c compressor intermittently increases the workload on your cars engine, rolling down the windows disrupts the aerodynamics of your cars exterior creating a continuous workload increase on your cars engine.

Here in the US, we don't have air conditioing. Or petrol for that matter. Here, using your air conditioning uses more gasoline, unless you're at freeway speeds with your windows rolled down. In that case, it's a wash between A/C with windows up and no A/C and windows down. If you can stand windows up with A/C off, you'll get about 10 percent better gas mileage.

It may use a little more, but with the windows down it will use even more. Always run an a/c on max, to save fuel, on normal it sucks air from outside and tries to cool it so it works harder.
