$5 a week for each. I have a 5 yr old boy and 7 yr old girl. I started giving allowance when they were 5 yrs and could do more on their own ... each day they need to eat what I make for meals, clean up their room, complete all their homework, brush teeth, make their beds, NO fighting and/or arguing about toys and such, shower, put dirty clothes in the hamper and be in bed by 8:30pm .. ALL on their own - without my prompting .. once I have to start "nagging", I take $1 away. I also have a chart on their bedroom wall that has their responsibilities on it - so there is no question. Also, they are not allowed to spend their money -- it has to go into their student saving's accounts ... and they LOVE to see the sum grow and grow! We are planning to let them have limited access to the money once they reach high school age -- to help pay for personal shopping, proms, special trips, etc ...

$10 a week for a teen, $2 - 5 for younger, and I never connected it with chores.
A child is a part of the family and has responsibilities like every family member. A child also needs some autonomy in saving and spending money. The two are completely separate.
On the occasions when my child wanted to earn some extra money, then I'd come up with specific jobs — beyond the scope of ordinary chores — things that I would have otherwise done, or paid someone else to do.

That would depend on you and your financial situation, the child's age and level of responsibility.
I was always poor, so allowance wasn't something I had to give out. There were times when things would go extra good and at that time I would fork over some of the extra according to what I could afford. Even as teens my kids didn't get much. Allowance isn't necessary, altho it is nice if you can do it.

I used to get £5 a week (current exchange rate = $9.09 US), then pay it into my savings account when I could be bothered, and earn a few extra £££'s a year interest on it :-)
If I had my own kids, I'd probably give them £5 a week basic pocket money + an extra £1 for each job they did to help around the house (but also knock off £1 for every time they've had to be told off).

NONE! My girls, ages 9 & 10, have certain chores and responsiblities around the house that they need to take care of. I am not going to pay them to do what they are supposed to do. When they want to make some money for something they want, they can do extra things - pulling weeds out in the yard, washing the cars, etc - but I do not think an allowance is necessary since we take care of all their basic wants and needs.

I give my 11 year old $15 a week. She has to do the dishes every night, Feed the cat and clean her room before school, and for every chore she doesn't do I take $1 away. It really works for us and it's not too much $ :)
