You will need to teach your cats to not use the furniture to scratch. Make sure you provide them with scratching posts of various materials, i.e. carpet, sisal, wood, cardboard and train them BEFORE you get new furniture.

Use double stick tape on the spots they scratch on your furniture now and that will deter them until you have their new habits in place.

Be patient, but confident. It can be done. Trust me, I have 5 fully clawed cats in my home and brand new, pristine furniture.

FYI -- please don't declaw your cats. The procedure is cruel -- they do not simply remove the claws, they cut off their entire front knuckle. It can lead to many physical and behavioral problems. Trimming their claws with a nail clippers is fine, but won't completely protect your furniture without training. In the traning stage you can try a product called "Soft Paws" which slip over the nails and protect furniture and other items from their claws, but they do need to be inspected and replaced regularly because they fall off as the cat's claws grow.

Well you can always redecorate using brick or PVC pipe.
Not much in the comfort level though, but that's about what your options are.
You've got to decide, who's the homeowner and who's the pet.
Time to trim their claws.

fabric cats... hm, I hear a pun coming on...

That might be an idea, though... a fabric cat won't damage furniture..

You could tape plastic over the scratch spots until they finally stop.
also spray bottle works great, but only when you can catch them.

declaw the cat! get a spray bottle and everytime it does it, squirt it, they hate water.
