since we're talking about male hairstyles - i've got a clear monk's pate on top, that you can clearly see from helicopters or the shoulders of Danish people, or when I stoop to lay my jacket in puddles in front of ladies.

It's not the cool way to go bald.

The rest is thinning but it's still kinda ok. No actual style as such, but it's not offensive. Grey flecks.

At what point to I give up and start shaving the whole thing? How do I know when it's time? is it ever time?

I have a large head. Hats seldom fit.

Started that at 21, never shaved it and I will soon be 60.
Shines all the time (shave those very few hairs every morning), kids and women pay a quarter to rub it for good luck.
My hair is long, have a ponytail, and a decent amount of respect in the Engineering World (Ponytail is my trademark).
Some women love it.
Young and old and all darn sexy.
I have the large head also, so hats don't make it for me either.
Specifically ask the ladies this question, leave it for a couple of weeks, and you might be pleased.

I'd think it depends on how much it bothers you. Some guys just go for a very short hairstyle so it's not as noticeable, some shave it off, some just don't care. If it really gets to you, shave it. A lot of girls go for that all-bald thing now anyway. My guy is going bald same place you are, and I really couldn't care less whether he's got all his hair or not.

Maybe you should start wearing a Yarmulke (yaum-a-ka)
The little beanie thing Jewish guys wear, not that you have to change religions but why should only Jewish dudes have all the fun wearing them?!
Or just become a monk?
Shave it all off.

You can get a short kind of spiky cut, maybe even a military style always looks great on a guy--if not, I say shave it--after all, bald is beautiful!! : - ))

mine's well thin on top but leaving a bloody stupid 'tuft' at the front,,,,,,,, at least you have the option of growing the rest long and pulling it into a rather high pony-tail over your monks patch.

Get a hairstylists opinion. Leave your hair as it is. If you just have to do anything get a hair thickener for your thining parts.
