The CORRECT answer to your question is yes. Stop signs were originally yellow and black, and in some areas black and white, from the early 20's through the mid/late 50's. The current red/white combo began in the late 50's and was soon standardized across the country. There are still some(but very few) of the old style signs out deep in rural areas in some states, particularly back roads in the South. Some of the old style signs can be found in antique shops and malls and are highly collectible.

Yes! Back in the 1930's and 40's.
Yellow with black lettering. Changed later to the familiar red sign to increase visibility and durability over the seasons.

I'm 45, and I remember the "Caution" sign that was yellow and black, it was shaped like a stop sign, it also had those little round "PEARL" reflectors in it, remember them , lol
