This horse has one hoof in the grave. Millionaire owner isn't doing a humanitarian thing, he's protecting his investment on paper. Probably didn't renew his insurance on the horse.

There has been nothing about this for money. And if the horse was insured...the INSURANCE COMPANY calls the shots, not the owner. The cheapest thing to do would have been put him down on the backside. There is NO guarantee he will ever breed a mare. Fact is right now if nothing else goes wrong he *probably* will not be able to breed next year and if he does it won't be for a full season. A horse has to support over 1,000 pounds on two legs - and his are compromised. The 80% hoof wall that is gone will take AT LEAST a year to regrow...a year from now is well past breeding season. He is not out of the woods yet.

What other stories from the sporting world gather coverage...who assaulted who, who's cheating who out of what...what sports stars are behaving badly and getting arrested. Screwy stories? He's one of the few who has never been arrested, never assaulted a fan, never taken the easy way or cheated to get a chance to play. The negativity of so much perhaps it's of interest to see a sports star who takes things at face value. Things are what they are. He doesn't whine to the press about his playing days are over. He doesn't complain he's not paid enough. Sometimes there should be more horses in the news...and less of the athletes behaving badly

Sherryn's comments below are just ignorance. You obviously dont' know anything about horses but are using the situation for your own ignorant goals. This is NOT the first time the public has seen horses injured. There is NO WAY - absolutely zero NO WAY a horse an run on laminitis - your comment "the laminitis issues, which I suspect may have been present BEFORE the "accident"" is so far off base it shows complete lack of understanding. A horse with laminitis cannot WALK let alone RUN. There is heat in the foot. This is not a condition that goes undetected....there is zero chance of it being unnoticed. And it goes to show no matter what horse people do it's "wrong". If he'd been put down to alleviate suffering (which many ARE) then they're wrong and if they try everything to save him (which they're doing) then that's wrong too. It is not just famous horses that get laminitis or get injured. The donations to the clinic provide help for other horses. There is no cover up. If he's in pain and quits he'll be put down. That's been on the bubble for some time. It was said from DAY ONE there was a chance laminitis would happen down the road...there are some medical things known and despite prevention it happens anyway. If anything Barbaro has brought awareness of the need for medical information which can be gathered only from trying different things.

The frame by frame replay shows contact between Barbaro's leg and Brother Derek's - THAT likely contributed to the breakdown. They have more vet checks and medical checks than most humans do. The fact that Jazil - the Belmont winner - has time off for bone bruises (which do not show without medical exams!) shows the attention to detail and the amount of diagnostics these horses go through.

I am a member of the media and we write what the majority of the public wants to read. The horse is heavily insured and actually The Jackson's would have made out better putting him down.

Barbaro will NEVER be able to produce Barbarbabies if he does survive. At least not ones that can qualify as thoroughbreds so that is not an issue either. Uh, how do I say this gently--what horses need to do to reproduce he will be incapable of even if he heals okay. He will never be 100%.

I have been at New Bolton when the Jackson's were there several times and these people are not doing this for the money. As far as exposing the truth about horse racing, the media has been doing that for years. However, there are different levels of horse racing and Barbaro is in the higher echelon. These horse are run young which is, I believe not always wise, but they are millions of dollars worth of investments and they are absolutely treated that way. The majority of them, such as Smarty Jones are treated like children.

Do you even know what "humanitarian" means? I think you meant humane, and yes, Barbaro is very insured. The media exposure isn't unnecessary, it is what the people who care about this horse, like me, wants. And believe me, he is a LONG way from having one foot in the grave. He has more will to live and a better attitude than most people. There is a very good chance that Barbaro may NEVER be able to breed, when he makes it through all of this, yet his owners are still trying to save him. Why? Yeah..he did make them money, that's what racehorses who are great like Barbaro do. But the reason they are doing it is because they LOVE their horse, and it wouldn't surprise me if by the time this is all said and done, they will have spent more money on his care than he won in his career. So obviously, their "investment" is not a motivating factor. I believe it is purely love, their recognition of his fighting spirit and his desire to LIVE..which is a big part of what has gotten him this far. If you don't like the "media exposure", then turn off your TV and do something "humanitarian" like volunteer somewhere!

Barbaro is the Poster Child for exposing the Racing Industry for what it really is & I'll have to agree that the stories are getting pretty twisted as to what's really goin' on! Remember, this is the first time that the Public has ever really been exposed to the goings on of the track in regards to the horses themselves. In the past, we only heard about the people, now we're getting some info on the horses & the Media has really taken a turn for the worse because they have stopped exposing the negative side & have begun to concentrate on the laminitis issues, which I suspect may have been present BEFORE the "accident". Insurance or no insurance, this horse is being put through hell for purposes of experimentation in the Equine Medicine, much like the Children's Hospitals did in their cancer research departments in the 1970's & still do today. This whole thing is a cover up for something & only time will bring it to the forefront for all to see.

His owners are doing the humane thing!!Most horses would have wrongly been put down at the track but barbaros owners just want to save there horse they don't care if he can never breed they just plainly want to save him good greif just open your eyes to the articles and read them it does not take a rocket scientist to figure it out!!!I so agree with Karen F.You need to stop looking at the TV and actually read what Barbaro and his owners are going through. You want to know the bill for barbaro huh huh!!!???? It will shut you right up his medical bills are over 3 mill and his owners still are pouring more in the colt won 2mill that and his medical bills sure have a heck of a difference!! They simply love there horse and since barbaros chances of ever producing a racehorse are microscopic his owners don't care they are just making sure they do every thing they can to help there horse!!!!!You are full of it though!

The guys not a millionaire for no reason. Its the horse that won the Kentucky Derby, he'll make multi-millions yearly putting him out to stud.

Its not unnecessary media exposure. Its not like its trumping the events in the mideast or even any baseball headlines. Its a pretty relevant story considering the horses achievements, and the public way the horse got hurt.

The media makes something out of nothing all the time. That seems to be their jobs.
They push all sorts of stupid stories at us and when they interview someone they ask the stupidest questions.
I like hearing about Barbaro. I love horses and follow racing.
At least it is not covered about so big steriod monser who has beat or killed his wife or girlfriend or just acted like a a*s as usual.
Sports new sometimes is bleak as it is who behaves the worst.
I am not a soccer fan and look at the coverage for the idiot who head butted another player. I saw an lot of coverage on that.

Bravo to those individuals supporting the media in providing detailed information to those of us interested in Barbaro's welfare!!

Horse racing/betting/humane sport? (pro or con) is another issue altogether. Address this in the proper forum.

For those interested, Barbaro has a competent staff of physicians and trainer. The concerns of the owner's (finances, insurance, etc.) is yet another forum and should also be addressed separately. I am concerned that they are currently in Africa--not by their horse's side--however, they know he is in good hands; they may have their personal reasons for being away.

Let the media continue with their coverage of his progress--some of us love Barbaro and have the "need to know". Our love for Barbaro is subtantiated by my source.

Yes the media takes the cake, but this one has all the makings of a great medical achievement that will probably help even humans one day.

I differ...this horse showed it all, class, courage, and dignity when severely hurt.

God save this horse!
