I am English but this is not a case of having a go at the Scots. Scotland were always at the World Cup finals and had great players playing in the Scottish league and down here in England. Has the foreign player boom affected your game and National team?
I can see England going the same way.
Your thoughts please?

Trouble with Scottish football...and soon English football, too many foreign players in squads. It's ridiculous that clubs are signing 16-17 year olds from abroad and sticking them in their youth and reserve sides. It's also stupid that sides can field teams on matchdays without a single British player. Everyone moaned about the three foreigner rule when it was in place..but it's obvious now what a good rule it was. Teams in England and Scotland...along with the rest of the European Union should be allowed to field a total of no more than 3 players from outside of their respective countries on matchday. Of course, it obviously restricts freedom of movement and trade in the EU, so maybe they should change the law to allow exceptions such as this. England are already starting to suffer as a result of the number of foreign players over here....

I think for a long period Scotland were blessed with some great players. The great players are not about. The opportunity for Scots to perform in the Scottish league or in England has been diminishing. Finally, Scotland cannot afford the same backup that large nations can afford. Taking all these things together it is clear that Scotland has suffered over the last few campaigns. However, I do feel that there is the beginning of a comeback. It will not be Euro 08 but it could be South Africa.
One lives in hope.

Yes, the foreign player boom has had a detrimental affect on Scottish football and the introduction of young home based players in particular.

In common with England, prices to get into football grounds in Scotland are far too high. The result? Young kids can't afford to go so lot's of possible players of the future are lost. Also teams being full of foreign players means young guys won't have their local heroes to aspire to. You know, the local lad who jumped over the terracing wall and into the first team.

Scotland definentley have their problems at international level and it seems England may be heading the same way. There are green shoots in evidence now for the Scottish national team, but the draw for Euro 2008 is very difficult. England though should be okay. For now.

I disagree that Scottish Football is on a downer. Just a few seasons ago Celtic were in a major European cup final and last season Rangers did well to progress as far as they did in the Champions League. I am a Hearts supporter and with the Romanov revolution at Tynecastle we are now a third force in the SPL finishing second last season. The football played in Scotland is attractive and exciting to watch but I agree that there are too many foreign players involved. Things are slowly changing and most teams now are trying to build on their youth policies and there are some exciting young Scottish players being introduced into some of the first teams. Things look positive for a future Scotland national team but perhaps the Euro 2008 competition will come too soon for them. Especially when you consider the other teams in the group include Italy, France and Ukraine.

Because as far as i can remember the last great Scottish sides were in the late 60's early 70's.Since then all the great Scottish players have moved on to England or the continent to earn a better living and moved back to Scotland in the twilight of their career. The SPL is now about Celtic and Rangers with Hearts last season trying to break their dominance but have not got the resources to do it.If the Old Firm ever entered the English premiership, they would be lucky to finish mid-table.A Welshman who is an adopted Scot.

I am not in the least bit interested in Scottish football love! As an English person you should be ashamed of yourself. The abuse I had to suffer during the World Cup was abysmal any excuse to come out with anti English rhetoric and some of it was foul - and I don't even follow football. Unless you live in Scotland and are English you will have no idea of what it is like. Of course everything is back to normal now that the Auld Enemy (that's us) are defeated again. Third rate, small country syndrome.........

Yes. The Souness revolution at Ibrox started it and most clubs thought the Bosman thing was the answer to keeping up with the big two so ignored youth and started getting in players of experience but not much more skill. I would say though that I am optimistic we are maybe turning the corner a bit but we won't see any benefit for another year or two so Italy, France and the Ukraine can relax.

the scottish sun have started a 'bring back football' campaign. kids don't get to play football in the streets anymore, all the fields have 'no ball game' signs up, there is a serious lack of facilities. maybe that's one reason.

and 'duke' - it was a scot who invented what we know as the modern game of football, you'd do well to remember that.

Scotland always lived on past memories, of how good footie was back then, but they seem to forget without proper academy's coaches and investment yes we mean you at the SFA and SFL they are just going to stay total ****, oh and the team also has to lose that shitty ability to self destruct, that's all folks.
ps i'm scottish
