It's been around forever, we just didn't know what it was until more recently with the advancement of technology. People used to die of cancer all the time but their deaths were attributed to "old age" or "mysterious incidients" instead.
We were talking about it in my England History class last semester. Many of England's queens (including Catharine of Aragon and more) were discovered to have died from breast cancer, but we only learned that now after testing their bones. Their deaths were said to have been caused by many other things instead. Other excuses included "lonliness" and "broken heart". Which we know nowadays don't normally actually kill anyone. They just died of some form of cancer, tumor or cyst conveniently after the death of a loved one or something.

Cancer is very old but hasnt been around forever.
It goes hand in hand with todays life styles and is a reaction to all the toxic chemicals around us, these toxins attack the cells within our bodies and cause cancer. Years ago when things were all natural and we didnt produce fumes cancer was very rare.

It was known in the ancient world, but of course no one knew what caused it. It wasn't all that common (it is thought) because so many people died of infectious diseases before they had time to get cancer. One of the reasons we see an increase of it in developed countries is because now people are living long enough to develop strange diseases like lymphomas.
