The "Jesus Fish" is referred to as "Ichthys". The short of it is that Christianity "adopted" it from the pagans (Chritianity adopted many traditions, holidays, and symbols from other religions, cultures, etc.)
You can take it as an acronym:
I is the first letter of the word Jesus in Greek: Ιησους
CH are the first letters of the word Christ (Χριστος)
TH are the first letters of the word THeou (Θεου), Greek for God
Y is the first letter for Uios (Υιος), Greek for son.
S is the first letter for Soter (Σωτηρ), Greek for saviour.
In Christianity it was originally a secret symbol to identify themselves to other Christians.
In the very beginning (pre-Christian) it symbolized the "Great Mother" associated with life force, reproduction, etc. Also, arguably, it was symbolic of the female... reproductive apparatus.

The early Disciples used the fish as a symbol for Christianity. It is believed that the Disciples chose the fish, because Jesus taught in the Galilee, and most of His first Disciples were fisherman. Also, the initial letters of each word in the Greek phrase "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior" form the word ICHTHUS, which means "fish." Another belief is that the fish goes against the currents or the river, lake etc. Christianity is supposed to go against the flow of evil, sin and lusts of the flesh.

If you mean the icathus (probably spelled wrong) its about being a fisher of men, from the bible. Yu know that big book u probably own but dont read. It started early in christianity , 2 people facing each other one would use his foot to rub one half in the dirt the other would rub the other arc to make the fish. It was a sign they were both christian when that could get ya killed. Is that what u are asking about? any way now you know that even if thats not what u meant.

I'm not sure I can explain it so that you will understand, but I'll try.
Long ago, and still in some places, it was illegal to practice christianity. So that fellow christians could recognize one another, they made a curve with their foot in the dirt. If you were a fellow believer, you would also make a curve in the dirt with your foot. Put the two curves together and you get the fish symbol. We no longer need this symbol in America: but it's a sign of a believer.

You are a retard. When Christianity was outlawed and you could be crucified for believing in it the fish was used as a symbol to identify other believers. A person would draw one half and if the other person drew the other half then obviously they were a believer. Christ was not a fish.

the fish was a symbol early Christians, who were persecuted rather viciously, used to identify themselves to one another... they would chat casually and one or another would scratch part of the sign into the sand, and if the other person was also a believer, he would finish the sign. no, Jesus was not a fish:)
