Can you get away with having two cats in an apartment, in most cases, without telling management, if you don't have the money for the deposit. Anybody done this? Just curious.

Last additional details before I pick a best answer. I already have these pets and have to move into an apartment, but if these people who think I am risking my "integrity" or am being "deceitful" I suppose I can just put my cats in a shelter and let them be euthanized in a couple of weeks...sound better? These are some harsh answers for such a simple question, it's not like I asked about commiting adultery on my spouse or something. I appreciate everyone's answers, though I think some of you need to lighten up. Thanks!

Well, I was in your situation kind of. I was only allowed to have one cat, but we had 2. I paid the pet deposit, but I was always worried that both cats would be sitting on the window sill at the same time and the landlord would come by. But, we lived there for 3 and a half years, and we had no problems.
It's not like you are committing a felony or anything! If anything, you are making sure they have a good home.
Definitely don't bring them to a shelter!!!!! Take them in, just make sure you keep the litter box very tidy so it doesn't smell, and make sure you get them lots of scratching pads and toys so they don't mess up the carpet. Trader Joe's (if you have one in your area) has an awesome cat scratcher. I have 3 cats now (in a house I own) and they just go crazy for those things. They all have their claws, although our latest addition did a number to the carpet. But, he didn't have enough scratching pads around to counter it.
As far as puke/hairball stains...this could be a problem. We bought a handheld carpet cleaner, and it does the trick most times. Although we have a cream color carpet (not our choice, it was here when we moved in). So, some of the stains are still there, but when we sell this place, we will probably put new carpet in or hardwood floors anyway.
Good luck, your babies will appreciate you for this!

Shauna, you are sol when it comes to having a cat without management finding out. 1. Bug spraying days - they come inside to spray. 2. Any maintenance when they need to come inside. 3. Cat in the window when you're not home. 4. The smell; even well-trained cats smell like cats. And where were you planning on hiding the cat box? 5. The carpet; cats tend to kelk up from time to time, even if they don't ever get mad at you and do their dirt in the carpet (which does happen, btw). I tried an experiment one time when I got one of those lifelike looking sleeping cats from an antiques store. I put "Mockcat" in a straw basket, and it did surprise folks when they came in. I actually almost got in trouble with management until I brought "Mockcat" to the office and showed them he was not a real cat. One thing I did to avert the monthly pet rent was to trade a carpet exchange for waiving the pet rental fee. That was above-board, but the carpet was truly horrible by the time we finally moved; and from the number of times Bart kelked up, I'd say it was making him sick. Basically, when you're in an apartment, you have to play by the rules or find somewhere else to live. You might get by for a month or two, but ultimately, you're in constant danger of fines and/or eviction if you do. It's cheaper in the long run to pay the fee. Cheapest yet is to forego getting the cat until you can really afford him or her -- fees and all. I wish you well!

When I lived in an apartment, I had 3 cats and never told or paid a deposit. Our cats never ruined anything and we kept the place clean. They never knew the difference.

I think not, since management enters apartments unannounced for various reasons, such as maintenance. At least, that's the way it was when I was living in apartments. It's also dishonest and against your lease. I wouldn't try it.

2 cats is a bit much...I could see if you had a hamster or fish, but if the management has to fix your apartment while you're not there, and they see two cats and no payments, they can
1. evict you and keep the security deposit
2. make you pay a penalty depending on the lease
I wouldn't chance it....you can't sneak them forever...

No. Management has a key to your apartment and may show up unexpectedly (mine does all the time). If they see a cat, they can evict you.
Read your lease agreement. If it says you can be evicted, don't do it!

you can get away with it but they will usually catch you. they wont say anything until you move out, then you will not get your deposit back, and they will charge you for carpet cleaning, and new paint for the appartment. it happened to my step daughter.
