Those animals are more afraid of you than you of them. I may be wrong because most of these answers would indicate to me they are mostly big city people that are afraid of there own shadows. Here we have bears come into town now & then but they don't stay long when they figure out they are in harms way they head for the woods.

Chances are that if you come upon a wild animal such as a bear, that it is more suprised than you. I am not sure about wildcats, but if you are hiking in the woods, and are concerned about bears, try to move with the wind at your back, & make lots of noise as you move along. Bears will avoid people when given a chance.

Twice while fishing I've had brown bears come pretty close(less than 20 feet). We just didn't make eye contact with them and carried on with our business and they went away after a few minutes. I've also come across Mountain Lions(cougars) in the wild. Same thing, just went about my business and they went away. Generally, if you don't act like a threat they will leave you alone. What I've always been told is that you NEVER run away, if you feel spooked, then SLOWLY back away. If they seem a little too interested in you, make noise and try to appear bigger.

I peddled up to a diamond back rattle snake on the bike trail. I stopped my bike and kept my distance while it slithered across the trail. It was about three feet long. After it disappeared into the weeds on the other side and rattled (an eerie sound) I headed down the trail towards South Connellsville....
I also encountered a small red fox on that trail. It let me walk up to it and take it's picture. Someone must have been feeding it because it wasn't afraid of me at all....

Crawl up a tree , get back the the truck, don't threaten the bear or look at it. Carry a gun into the woods.

stand on your toes and stretch out your arms. make yourself as big as possible. most often they are more afraid of you than you are of them. a cow moose is more dangerous than a bear or cougar if you get between them and their young. if you are out in the bush make a lot of noise, as long as they know you are coming they will leave the area or just let you walk by. i have lived in the BC rockies all my life and have had a lot of encounters and the only scary ones were when the animals had young with them or when a bear had a kill it was feeding on.
if one does want to attack drop your pants, put your head between your legs and kiss you butt good-bye

Make a lot of noise and make yourself look big by holding your hands in the air or opening up your coat. As soon as they run off you leave the area quickly while making a lot of noise.
If you are attacked you fight as hard as you can, don't believe any of this "playing dead" crap.
