Statue of limitations will apply, which can vary from state to state.

Did you steal something with enough value to be considered a Felony? Or was it just a Misdemeanor? You'll have to look into it, as that will determine how long you'll have to lay low.

Of course, you could do the right thing and either return what you took, or turn yourself in, but somehow I doubt that will happen.....

Do you mean is the statue of limitations a year? Not necessarily. Depends on Misdemeanor vs Felony, etc...
