Provided all American warships would line a few hundred meters from Iranian coas, and do nothing to defend themselves. And provided Iranians would have all the time they need to prepare themselves.
And, of course, they would be damn lucky.
US Navy is the biggest navy in the world (correct me if I'm wrong here). And the ships are dispersed among numerous naval bases, ports (in the US as wellas overseas) and en route. It's simply out of the reach of Iranian armed forces.
Second, they are well-armed with decoys and counter-missile defense systems. Making a missile hit (major weapon in modern sea combat) a difficult thing (however, not impossible). Also, they are well-protected by the Air Force and naval aviation, which is going to defend them vs anti-shipping missiles (a hard task, but I know that Naval pilots do train such operations), and - more important - their launhers - both planes, ground launchers, and enemy ships.
Coastal defense guns could be useful (there's no way to stop or fool a cannon round), but missiles have range far superior to guns, and any coastal defense batteries would be destroyed by missile fire and aircraft long before the fleet would come into their range.
So, all in all, I belive that an all-out strike by Iranian armed forces could seriously harm a small US Navy task force. Maybe - maybe! - give a bloody nose to a carrier battlegroup. But it would be an all-out strike, after which there would be no Iranian armed forces to be spoken of. And giving a battlegroup a bloody nose doesn't mean elliminating it from combat...
To sum it up: no. There's no real way for Iranians to destroy the all US Navy in any predictable time. And even less - in 5 minutes.

Not a chance. We've got the biggest navy in the world whose sailors train like crazy all the time. We've got better guns, better missiles, better bombs, and better defenses. If we were to get into an all-out battle with Iran's navy, it would be over in an hour. I used to sit in the control center on watch while my ship was on deployment and browse through the current volume of Janes Fighting Ships, and I'm pretty sure the Iranian navy is very puny. Anybody with sense knows it would be a complete walk-over. We have the largest navy in the world, comprised of 12 carrier battle groups. I think the next largest is Brittain, which has 1 or 2 carriers (been a while since I checked info on Brittain navy, so this might be out of date).

The person that said that has been smoking too many old shoelaces. Iran doesn't have the capability of waging a successful all-out attack on the U.S. Navy that would destroy it in 5 minutes...or probably at all. Remember, the USN has ships strategically located at various harbors along the US coastline as well as ports overseas in various countries. Don't worry...we're relatively safe from Iran.

Not sure about that, but just a little info, I have a friend who is in the navy reserves, and she told me that within this next year HALF of the navy reserves wil be deployed overseas due to conflicts in the middle east. Just something to think about...

Iran couldn't defeat Iraq in a 8 year war ... we effectively crippled the Iraqi military in 6 months. Iran has no shot at beating us militarily.
