I went through that phase in my life too where I heard about speed reading, saw all the advertizements about scanning an entire book in an hour or so, and I tried to practice some of the skills to do that. I discovered that a major problem is that the faster you go, the less you retain. There may be special or gifted people out there who can pick up book, read it quicker than quick, and remember what they read, but that's not me. And doing that takes away the pleasure of really immersing yourself in a story, or recalling the fine details - details that if missed, detract from the completely understanding the theme of the book. So as you pursue the art of speed reading, try to keep an open mind that maybe speed reading is not the best reading, and that the best reading might be what you're doing right now. Just another opinion :)

Learn to Scan a page and delete out the things that you don't need in your mind (don't think about them) and pay attention to the words or phrases that are important.
