Hi. I live in Central Arkansas and my electricity is about to be shut off. I don't qualify for financial assistance and the electric company won't put me on a pymt plan or defer pymts because I'm so behind on my bill. I have a newborn son and nobody to help. I've called everywhere and everyone wants a run down of my finances and to fill out applications and get approved and whatnot. My husband has a decent job, which is "too good" for public assistance, but we still can't afford the electric bill. Anyone have any idea FAST?

Ask if they will take a partial payment in order to not shut it off-all nonprofits need that information and function under income regulations-try your local church or Salvation Army-you might run into the same thing, though.

If you have a newborn then it is against the law for the electricity to be shut off no matter how high the bill is. Look into the law regarding electricity and children under twelve months. I am from Massachusetts and here the law is that if there is a child under the age of twelve months living in the home the electricity must remain on. I hope this helps.

I would contact any local churches in the area or if you have a Salvation Army nearby, they may be able to help. Also, if your baby has ANY medical condition at all, get a note from your doctor. They cannot shut off your electric if you have health issues that require it. They may not even be able to shut it off, depending how old your baby is with the heat and all. Also visit http://www.liheap.ncat.org/profiles/Arkansas.htm I didn't get to check it out, but they offer alternative places for assistance when you don't qualify for financial assistance.

Take out a loan. Pay the bill. Start using less energy and paying your bill, even if it means shutting off the cable. You should have thought of this a long time ago. Sell a vehicle. Try your church (or a church, but don't just use them, offer to do community service to "pay it back"). Cut the expenses you don't need. Electricity is something you have to have, so you should make that a priority. And fill out the applications if you need the money!!

Alternately, find a home that uses less energy to live in.

I know it's not what you want to hear, but there isn't much you can do FAST (without breaking the law, anyway). You really need to set a realistic budget and cut out luxury items. For example, many libraries have internet connections that you can use for free. Sorry I can't offer any real help for your situation. Good luck

Ok I dont know if you are referring to places like salvation army and those when you say public assistance. But if you are not there are places called Salvation Army, Your town should have what they call a township office and they can offer emergency one time assistance. Or a place called ERBA not to sure if they have those in Arkansas. Or you can always try local chruches they will help.
Good Luck
