My hip tends to ache a lot. I run about 10-20 miles a week, and would like to know if there is a good stretch or other method that will help keep the pain down. It feels like someone is trying to pull my leg off. I go to a chiropractor, but would like additional help for between visits.

Where do you run? If you are running on the pavement all the time, you are pounding all of your joints. Also, if you are running on banked roads or on the track and always go the same direction, this will put stress on one hip. The best surfaces to run on are trails or grass as they give and do not cause so much pounding on your joints.
The best hip stretch I know is this: stand with one foot crossed over the other. Push the hip of the leg that is crossed in the back to the side and hold the stretch. Cross your feet the other way and repeat with the other hip. I learned this stretch in physical therapy when I had hip tendinitis.
Using the hip abductor weight machines at the gym will also help strengthen your hip muscles.
If your hip continues to hurt, see a sports orthopedist. No one else was able to figure out what was wrong with my hip. (a quit steroid shot ended months of pain!)
One more thing: how are you breaking up your mileage? A little here, and a little there, or most of it one long run? If most of it is all in one long run, you may need more short runs to gradually strengthen your hip joints.

I have a problem called illiotibal band syndrome. My pain tends to run in the hip socket and is the tendon that runs down from the hip to the outside of the knee.

There are a lot of hip injuries, but that is one I can definitely relate to.

I am not cured, but it is manageable and I am still able to run about 30 miles a week. I would suggest taking a break, perhaps for a week, if not more. Hit the Aleve or another anti-inflamatory. In addition, you may want to consider seeing an orthopedic or sports medicine guy to rule out a hip fracture.

There are some stretches you can do, if it is indeed the IT Band. Check out http://www.itbs.info

Just a word of warning, getting rid of IT Band issues is very tough and requires patience.

You may also want to check out http://www.coolrunning.com and take a look at their self-diagnosis for injuries and see if you can relate to one.

Good luck.
