I like the way California handles it. They are tough on ALL reported dog bites, and have no breed specific laws.
BUT, this is why>>
The most commonly reported dog breeds involved were pit bulls (24 deaths), followed by rottweilers (16 deaths), and German shepherds (10 deaths). The authors point out that many breeds, however, are involved in the problem.
Here are stats from another gov health site>>
The most common victims of dog bites are children, especially in incidents that prove fatal. Almost one half of all reported cases of dog bites involve an animal owned by the victim's family or the victim's neighbors. Most victims are involved in normal, nonprovoking activities before the dog attacks. For example, neonatal deaths resulting from a dog bite most often involve a sleeping baby.
Several dog breeds have been identified for their role in fatal dog bite attacks, including pit bull breeds, malamutes, chows, Rottweilers, huskies, German shepherds and wolf hybrids. From 1979 to 1988, pit bull breeds accounted for more than 41 percent of dog biterelated fatalities, three times as many as German shepherds.
THIS ONE FROM THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL 2002.
At least 25 breeds of dogs have been involved in 238
human DBRF during the past 20 years. Pit bull-type
dogs and Rottweilers were involved in more than half of
these deaths.

BSL is a flawed concept from the moment it is conceived. In most cases the dogs are targeted leaving the owner, which is the responsible, rational thinking party, out of it.
Some impose fines along with their laws but are often not enforced to the maximum so the owner gets away with a slap on the wrist.
Dogs are not the problem and BSL does not reconize this. People are the problem and until we find a way to punish people for their neglectful actions which allow dogs to bite and terrorize the public we will never stop the problem.
First problem is, take one breed away, these people will find another breed to replace it.
Since the APBT bans the Rottweiler is now on the rise as the most popular breed.
Now these dogs are taking heat from the general public and the BSL supporters. Again they are restricting the dogs and not the people.
BSL can be compared to gender profiling or racial profiling. Simply because a dog appears to be a dog on the restricted list it is treated as one.
What if you were driving down the road and the police took you to jail, sentenced you, and placed you on death row just for looking like a certain ethnic group? BSL does exactly that to dogs.
So why is it then that more BSL laws are implemented daily? God forbid a person have to take responsibility for their irresponsible actions and BSL supports these people by not placing very harsh punishments on them.

I think that this is a good idea. There is no way to tell whether or not a pit bull will attack. My neighbor had a pit bull for years and it was the most loving dog and they even let him sleep with their 3 year old daughter...then one day out of the blue, the dog ATTACKED a beagle and its owner nearly killing the beagle. Of course, my neighbor had the pit bull put to sleep the next day because they no longer felt safe having him in the house.
IT IS PROVEN that these dogs are known to attack even after they have been the best dog for years. The same goes for Rotties, Dobermans, etc. They are just not safe dogs to have around children and definitely not a good idea when you have NO IDEA how the owners are handling them. Would you want your kid attacked by one and hear the owner say they are the best dogs? I would hope not.

Pit bull are very bad dogs, especialy around children, I know some people many years age in morgan hill, ca where they had ther dog for years it knew the neighbors kids. One day the dog heard the little boy playing a 2 year old jump the fence and killed the little boy. After this pit bulls were band from Santa Clara County. In other countys people owning a pit bull had to put the intals in the dog burn in the skin.

Alot of people think that pit bulls are mean dogs when really they are not. it is all on how they are raised. They banned pit bulls in my area. They will let you keep a pit pull if you currently own one but you cannot breed them or purchase one. You have to get the dog fixed, registered through the police department and tattooed after all that stating that you did all that. But in my area people make the dogs mean on purpose for fighting reasons or just to make them mean. i don't know why they do but it is stupid.

It's a dumb, knee-jerk reaction by politicians trying to make themselves look good without understanding the problem. If there were no pit bulls, the sub-humans who fight dogs would use mutts or Boxers or Chihuahuas!
Discrimination and banning breeds is not the answer. Ask your local lawmakers to pass laws to prosecute the owners of any dog that is allowed to run loose. If someone has a vicious dog and it bites someone, that owner should be punished the same way as if he left a loaded gun lying around and a child shot himself with it - make it a major felony!
Physically, any large dog is capable of killing a child - even by accident. A Golden Retriever killed a child in NY this past winter - the child was sent out to play wearing a scarf. Tragically, the dog thought this was for him to play tug-of-war with and the child died of strangulation.

Over 90% of attacks by pit bulls are by ones breed for and trained to fight or abused and not trained right. The owners who act in this manner of caused the rest of us pain. In a lot of cases people are losing their loved family pets or worst their needed service dogs. BLS will not stop the attacks. Most of the owners of pit involved are into illegal actives, dog fighting, drug dealing and gun running. They already break the law so they will not mind breaking more. It they can no longer get the breed they are now using they will turn to another. Are we to outlaw all dogs over 30lbs. Pass and enforce laws against the people who do this not the breed its being done to. In most cases the ban never works for the reasons I just stated.

That's horrible. Pit Bulls are great dogs when they're trained properly. Any other dog can be dangerous too if they're trained that way. Technically speaking, the Chow Chow is a more inherently aggressive dog and more diffuicult to train as well, but nobody ever talks about banning them.

That's horrible! Pits are the most loving and loyal of all the breeds. People use that trait to demand violence from a dog that really wants to be a family pet. They are great with other animals, wonderful with kids and patient till the end. Does anyone remember that Petey from Our Gang was a pit.
