Its the Summer holidays. I have a three year old son with no friends and a 10 year old daughter with 2 local friends. Our daughter goes out all the time and doesnt want the burden of her little brother as we dont like her taking him away from the front garden.

The Dilemma is, our daughter goes to the park 10 minutes away and our 3 year old son keeps repeating himself over and over again that he wants to go out to play. Whats the best way to deal with him? How do we keep him occupied, bearing in mind this starts in the evenings, too late for him to go out.

Is it possible to find some children around your son's age to play with. I know my nephew keeps himself busy by interacting with other kids. I feel as though the best solution to this would be for him to interact with other kids. Also around evening time can be sort of a wind down time, maybe put in a movie like Dora the Explorer (I don't know if you allow your child to watch tv much or not)...Or maybe just going in the backyard. Does he have a little basketball hoop or ride on truck? That keeps my nephew occupied.

Why can't you take him to the park. Your daughter is on holiday now so her routine has changed for the summer - let your sone have a change too. You can always go back to putting him in the front garden when your daughter goes back to school. It will also give you a break from your 'usual' tourine.

If he's not in bed, and your ten yr old is still out, then it's not too late to take HIM out. Drag yourself off the sofa and take him to the park, he be worn out in 20 mins and happy as larry, and you'll still catch eastenders, big brother or whatever other rubbish is on the box.

He has an absolute right to recreation, (UN Convention for the Child). If you deny him, he'll have you in court before he's five...

Hmm.. a little boy.. well I have all girls, but one of them is three right now. She likes to play with blocks the most, but trucks keep her happy too. Usually she enjoys it more when I get down on the floor and play with her. Another thing we like to do is play in her little pool or take a bath (if its too late to be outside). Maybe instead of insisting he stay in, you could take him for a walk around the block or lay out a blanket in your garden and tell him he can be out there, but MUST stay on the blanket or he's gonna come in.

I bought my 3 year old a desk and filled it up with lots of things such as pens, paper, stickers, glue sticks etc. If your son likes drawing at all like my daughter does, this will keep him occupied for hours.

well i have a 3 year old nephew, and I am all the time at my sisters place, sittin down with him. we do all sorts of things (and you know I'm 19)

- I read to him (it also helps him to learn new words, and I also pick a book with lots of pics, and ask him as we go along the book, what that is, and what is he doing , stuff like that)

- I also like doing the big lego stuff with him, buildin stuff..

- just play with him, sittin down and play with cars,

- put the music on and dance and sing, my lil nephew looves that

- draw, nice quiet,

that is the only advice I can give you... cus this is what I do... I am a kid at heart and that is just the way it is..

Well, make sure he plays out during the day, maybe you could take him to the toddler group where he could make friends.

In the evenings ( if you dont have a garden ) buy him some colouring books or read to him.

Theres loads of things.

Play with him. Get on the floor and play silly games like they do in nursery school. London Bridge, Ring-around the rosie, hide and seek.
Enjoy him because in a few more years he won't need you to play with him
