I would let my cockatiels out of their cage form time to time, but not all the time. Birds cannot control their bowel movements. They cannot be potty trained.

Unless you feel like scattering newspaper or undone cardboard, and leaving it all over the house, she's right. My Mom's bird will even poop on your hand while your holding it. One thing you might want to consider is getting it's wings trimmed, so it can't fly too terribly far, or at all. But, unfortanately for you, your mom's 100% right this time. But, you're right, they do need out of the cage for a while. Especially if you want to clean the cage. You can opt in getting a bigger cage, though.

No not really!!You are right in as much as the birds need to be let out of the cage for a short period of time.I have had three budgies, all of which were let out for a while. You do not need to clip their wings at all.You can confine them to one room, close all doors and windows, not forgetting the curtains.Remove anything which could pose a danger to them, especially houseplants, many of which can be poisoness! Let all in the house know that the birds will be out,so no-one will enter the room.Let your birds out. If your birds are healthy and well, their droppings will not pose much of a problem as they should be very small and firm, which can be brushed up easily with a brush and dust pan. The birds only need be out for about 10-15 minutes. You will find they will probably fly around a couple of times, then settle somewhere, normally on top of the cage, encourage them to do so by placing some toys on top. When its time for them to return to the cage, either encourage one at a time on to your finger. If you have problems getting them back, remember this, birds will not fly in the dark. So keep a towel/sheet/cloth of some sort handy,do not open the curtains, turn out any lights, then place the cloth over the bird and gently pick up and replace in cage. You could set aside a time in the early evening to do this. Your birds will be able to exercise their wings, given a little freedom, making them altogether happier birds!! If you are careful, your birds will come to no harm, none of mine did. Just remember to follow the rules!!

Thats bad. A bird such as a parakeet needs to be out of its cage for 2 hours a day for mental health.
How would you feel, if you were born in a HUGE cage with all the room in the world to fly around in. Then you were crammed into a cage with your best friend, and you only sat on one or a few perches and couldnt fly as much or as far.
Letting them out will be good for them.
Here's what you could do, Buy a Playgym intended for birds, PETCO or PETSMART have them, then have their wings clipped unless its done already, I know what I said about flying around, clipping the wings doesnt mean they cant fly it just makes it a little harder, my birds are clippd and they can fly, in time their muscles will grow, or if your parakeets wings arent clipped and you can trust them, put them on the playgym, with food and toys and watch them when their out so they dont fall off and get stuck under the furniture.
All my birds including my parakeets are out for 4 hours a day and I watch them on their playgyms, and they love it, they step on to them and play with the toys and each other on them.

Yes it will. Basically they go when they feel like it. But they dont go ALL the time so you wouldnt have to clean up a lot anyway. You could try not feeding him for a couple hours and then let him out as this may lesson his bowel movements. I had a budgie and I let him out to fly around He didnt poo very much and most likely your bird wont either. Hell mostl likley just be curious and hang aruond certain areas.

It's good to let them get excersize, as long as you have a safe place for them. They usually head for a couple favorite perches each time they are let out. Once you know where they like to sit, put a newspaper or paper towel under it, or wait till the poop dries and clean it up. It doesn't really hurt anything, as long as you clean it up, but your mom probably just thinks it's too gross. You can make or buy a playground for your birds with perches, ladders, toys, and a tray underneath to catch the droppings. To get them to perch on it, use millet or scatter seed on it. If she absolutely won't allow it, tell her she needs to buy a bigger cage so they can fly at least a couple wingspans. And get perches of different sizes so they don't get stiff, sore feet. And lots of toys!!!

Hey.
--I have had my keets for 6 years almost now and i wanted to say that they do not fly into walls and stuff...i don't clip their wings but they fly in my room mostly..just be careful so that windows are closed always..then they will fly away and most likely cannot survive.
--So, the best thing is to buy a playpen and they will hangout there and then my birds on their own trained themselves to go back into their cage when they are done playing and hanging out. So, let them out they love it.

1) they pick their favorite spots- those are where you can keep an eye on to clean
2) they don't poop like dogs or cats. They are vegetarians,so it won't stink
3) let them fly,
* if not it's like putting a fish in a glass of water-cruel
* they will be more sociable with you and family
* they will get exercise, hence live longer
* They map out the place, so just close door where you don't want it to go
see pics of my budgie- flying and staying out of it's cage:

in case you desire a talker, you're extra proper with only one budgie. yet, only one with little interest may be lonely. that could be some thing to think about. adult males are meant to be extra proper talkers than women too. They do poop out of the cage of route, notwithstanding that is small and straightforward sufficient to sparkling. Budgies are liable to injuries even as out of the cage although, that is a ingredient to think about in case you desire a tame budgie that comes out to play. they actually do make tremendous pets although. they're genuine characters, sensible in my journey and that i imagine you may discover you go with to spend extra time with them than you imagine you'll. i recommend getting a tremendous parakeet e book that discusses such issues as feeding, taming, speaking etc. good success.
