I have a 3 year old and a 4 month old and at first my 3 year old HATED the new arrival. I think you just have to give each cat time and space and allow them to get used to each other. The kitten will want to play because he doesn't know any better that the cat dislikes him and wants her space - believe me, my 3 year old did and still does, but she'll give him a hiss and a swat on the head if he doesn't leave her alone. It's really like getting used to having a kid sister or brother, the older cat is used to being the ruler of the household, and thinks the kitten is stealing the spotlight. Just be sure to give your older cat lots of love and affection on her own time, as well as the kitten, and give both time to adjust to each other.
I was out of town, but my fiance told me the other day that for the first time in the almost 3 months since we got our kitten, that our older cat was grooming the kitten! They still get into a few fights every once in awhile when one invades the other's space, but overall it has gradually gotten better over time.
Best of luck with your cat family!

It will take time.. my cats took over a year to stop growling an fighting after being introduced separatley. If you are seeing a slight change in her behaviour then this is a good sign, but it can be a very slow process. The best thing you can do is to let them get on with it and sort out their differences. If your kitten is only 4 months old then your older cat will need to get used to the fact another cat has entered her territory, and cats are extremely territorial creatures. This is the reason why it will probably take longer than you expect.

Yes. I had an adult cat and then got a kitten, Hank. What I did was keep the kitten in the bathroom for the first couple of weeks. Then I would feed the cats at the same time on both sides of the door. I also bought cat snack and whenever I brought Hank out I would give Hailey a treat, so she would think it was a good thing to have him around.

Kittens are very bolshy - they like to test the boundaries of older cats to see how much they can push them and gain their own power. Cats then mellow as they get older - I'd give it a while - maybe a year or so. By then, hopefully they'll both know where they stand. Also neuter him at 6 months - else he'll really annoy her!
EDIT: I forgot. Another thing you might want to do - and I know this sounds strange - is take them to neutral territory, on holiday. It worked for two of my cats.

It will take a while for them to be ok with one another. I got my 2nd cat as a kitten when my older cat was 2 or 3 and it seriously took him an entire year to really like my new cat and then they loved each other. Then I got another kitten and my oldest cat didn't care but my middle cat was now mad and didn't like the kitten but eventually they got along, I don't think it took them as long however.

Some animals get along eventually, others don't. It depends on each animal's 'personality.' For instance, one of my kittens took instantly to my roommate's dog, the other is getting there now (2 months later). But neither one of them have taken to my parents' dog when we go to visit. It just depends and takes time.

They may or may not learn to like each other, but they will eventually learn to tolorate each other. My two cats still can't stand each other after a year, but they have worked out a system where they each keep to their own parts of the house and try not to come within eyesight of each other.

First way to go for helping an animal from the S.P.C.A. Also they may never "like" each other but eventually they will build a tolerence that will bring you some peace.
